Hello knights.

I've tried the "search", but with no success.
Can anyone tell me where in here, I can find info about this?

The basic and starting steps.
I'm not interest in creating music. I'm just trying to understand it's form, how it works.

I hope I'm not being to vacant.

Thanks guys!

Regards!

I did find this one.
But I was kind of looking for something more direct to the point.

I'll take my time there, anyway.

Thanks a lot mate.

Little bit confused, about what you mean about its form, how technical an answer do you want?

Basically, the 'classic' kick is sine wave (just like the sort you get on a scientific calculator)which is pitch bent very rapidly from a high pitch down to low pitch.

And that is pretty much it!

Some producers do things slightly differently, by layering to pitch bent sine waves together, which gives a slightly punchier sound, or distorting aspects of the kick and even applying very short reverb on the kick (like prometheus).

How much detail do you require?           .

For instance:

When people say, for ex: It's a 4/4 track.

What does that mean?

That there are 4 beats in 1 bar. Or 'Simple time'. Virtually all dance music is 4/4.

Time signatures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_signature

This means if you count in 4's or multiples of 4 (1 = 1 beat, or kick) you can expect changes in the song to come at regular intervals (8/16/32 beats)
Music is all based on patterns and maths so it is predictable and doesn't sound weird.

Try putting changes to your music every on some random number of kicks that is not divisable by 4 and you'll see it sounds very weird.

I read the whole thing, and the links for the other things I'm not aware of.
It's still bothering me though.

I know a 4/4 track, you have a break at every 32nd beat (electronic music).

Is it possible to make trance music for example, using other types of time? 2/4, 3/4 for instance.

Best Regards!

Simply put, the bottom number on a time signature tells you what kind of note is counted as one beat (4=quarter gets one beat, 8=eighth note gets one beat, 2=half note gets one beat, etc). The top note tells you know many of those beats (as defined by the below number) are in one bar. Thus 4/4 means (four beats to a bar)/ (one quarter note equals one beat)

The majority of all western music (trance, techno, pop, rap, country, whatever) is in 4/4. After that the most common time signature is 3/4. Other time signatures are pretty rare (unless you are playing jazz perhaps). The theme to Mission Impossible (5/4) and Pink Floyd - Money (7/4... or 7/8 depending on the sheet music, no real difference) are two examples of popular songs with odd time signatures.

A lot of people argue that trance in times other than 4/4 and the occasional 3/4 (which is different from triplets) doesn't work, but that is because a lot of people, when trying to write an odd time signature part, end up making a 4/4 part and sticking some random notes on the end which makes the part seem very awkward. However done correctly they can work very well. To blow my own horn here because it makes a good example, the track "Stepping Forward" on my last album is sited in most reviews as one of the highlight tracks of the trance disc. However no one's ever commented on, if they've even realized, the fact that it is in 7/4.

indeed dude, i've never realized that this tune is in 7/4. only now that i counted with i found out about it. the reason is that everything in .../4 sounds rhythmically "normal" to our ears.

i think it only gets really interesting when using completely odd signatures. such might sound unbearably weird in dance music indeed.

if you want to hear some really strange signatures, check out hamburg based weirdo-rock band Plokk. they use signatures such as 11/21 and so on.
