its the hats and the hatlines which make tracks osund fast or slower...

if there is a running hatline (every 2nd 16th) it will appear to be faster than it is...

its psycho acousstic

sure you can use different velocities for your kick. sublte changes often have big consequences.

possibly it is also an effect you can achieve with compression. with some settings you get the kick to pump. this pumping is audible, because the release setting won't allow the compressor to relax before a new kick gets played. with bad compressor settings, my first kick gets played louder too.

obviously normally you don't want let that happen, but I'm sure you can use this also in a creative way.

generally its better to keep the kick constant, with changes at a breakdown or whatever...

a better trick is to , make your first high-hat of a bar to be soft, with the subsequent following 3 open hihat hits to get louder, with the last one for the bar the loudest...

but remember keep it subtle...

just a not for all of you out there....

the human ear can only begin to detect a change in so-called loudness if it is over 3dB, i.e if you make somthing only 2.5 dB more than it was before, it will be undetectable to the human ear.........

well

1. the first kick might be a compression attack thing , if its too open the after brake the first kick dont compress very good. sometimes its nice tho to have this effect.. on acid it made me jump evry time the compressor turned off

2.kick and bass compressors and eq often effect the speed.try playing around with diffrent settings (dont forget to adjust output volume)           www.sattelbattle.com
