Hi i wonder if there is a formula or something which shows how long a kickdrum should be in ms in relationship with the bpm.
I believe as a drummer plays in "real" life he decides how long the kick drum should decay in relation to the songs tempo. This is probably important for all the other drumsounds aswell the hihats, snareand crash.
I searched the internet and didn´t find anything about this topic
So if you know anything abou this topic please help me

Best regards Conny

mostly its up to you, but i'd suggest having it short enough so it doesnt mess with your bass. its mostly just preference.

[edit] in my opinion^

The formula is ((60000/bpm)/4)

ana3imandros - it helps if you press the right buttons on your calculator...

I can also highly recommend a program called Freequency which has both tempo and tuning tools.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Hey Colin!
thanks for recommending it! Handy little tool indeed...it displays lots of information on a small area.

take a look at S-cal if you havent, the dev is about to upgrade it to VST format, it might get interesting then, also check his VST FX out...they look cool, i have only tried the Autopanner and from first impression it seems cool...

i usually set the decay of the kick envelope to 1/16 but i find that i loose the bassier part of the kick... is this ok?

In real and synthetic drum sounds, the "click" of the kick drum is way too short for you to have to use maths for the decay of the ADSR that controls the filter cut-off's or oscillator's frequency.
Just make sure you record a kick where the sustained, low end frequency stays longer than you really need, and then simply chop the audio region (a touch less than 1/16th)with a small fade to eliminate the chance of non zero-crossing point artifacts, or simply use a gate.

i just put a gate on the kick, and close it further and further untill i hear that it doesn't cross the bass anymore.... then i make a little rendition to look at the wave and see if it's cut short enough.

i wouldn't laugh... it's not the first time i realise i can't trust my ears, mostly if i'm working on a track during the whole day... by the end of it my ears can barely hear silence           roll a joint or STFU :)
