Hello friends of psytrance,

I have a question about kick and bass, for example if I put my bass A0 Produce it then lies approximately at 55 Hz Does my kick drum will also be around the 55 Hz? How can I find out which frequency is best for my bass note?

nice greetings

Hi,

I asked the same question few months ago in this topic: http://forum.isratrance.com/kick-and-bass-position/

It will be maybe usefull for you . But it wasnt exactly answer to my question and I think that to your either. So I can tell you what I discover and it will maybe help you. So to me sound kick and bass good if they have the same root frequency or multiple of it. For example kick and bass both on 35Hz (+-C#) or kick on 35 and bass on 70 or swaped. This settings give you a nice rolling combo because it sound almost like one element at least to me . But you have to solve freq conflicts and I always use sidechain compression to fit them together without freq conflicts. Many people prefer their ears and put bass and kick to sound good. Its propably right way but for me is easier to start from settings above.

And one simple advise if your bassline lacks of power dont boost the bottom end around 50Hz its not helpful because mainly sound system cant reproduce these low frequencies. Instead boost 2 higher harmonics of your root note on bass and kick or use bass enhancer with psychoacoustic algorithm.

Goodluck!

Well, if kick and bass have the same fundamental frequency, they tend to overlap, and take each others space away, which results in a kind of muddled unclear sound, so for the beginning I would try to find different frequencies, you can also try notching out some of that fundamental in either kick and bass, the possibility of doing that depends on your mix quality and which component... and be careful when doing that...

if they dont play at same time it don't really matter but depend what you try to archieve..

if the result after is getting the kick/bass to sound almost like "one" kick and bassline could share exaclty the same frequency range from the low to the highs with similar frequency balance so these sound very close to each other in a way

you could also mix these a way that they complement each other insteed it would be a bit the oposite ,where kick have energy the bassline have less and vice et versa.. everyhting can work good except maybe bassline with more low end energy than the kick..can sound kinda strange

The frequency of the kick note is not that important if you cut off some of the lowest frequencies of the kick (that way you will mask the fundamentals making it easy to blend in to whatever key of the bass line).

However, if you do NOT cut off the lowest frequencies it might be noticable unless you play the kick in the same key as the bass. In a track with multiple bass keys, cutoff might be your only option unless you use EQ automation or something similar.

you can try to have your kick tail slowly pitch in the sub..so when it play at same time as the bassline it get lower in frequency and mess lesss with the bassline fondamental

This may vary from genres, but for psytrance I find that the best is to surround your kick with the bass. Meaning that if you've got your kick's peak @54hz I would use a bass that has main harmonics like @45hz - 70 hz. Also sidechain its a must do here. I find this very usefull for fullon psytrance. Hope it helps!           ProtoDrive https://soundcloud.com/protodrive

A0 is 27 Hz. you probably mean A1. I think kick and (most) bassnotes in same rootnote often works best, kick can be one octave up also. http://forum.isratrance.com/quick-tool-to-detect-key-of-samples/ might help you.
sidechaining helps to keep the mud out.           http://soundcloud.com/vipal

I was doing the bass and kick to the same root note (sometimes an octave up or down)
But now i find that it sounds even better when putting on the 3rd or 5th harmonic in the scale, it kinda gives more room and is still sound in tune           VA - Spiritual Science out now!
