Kick synthesis

I work mostly with Fruityloops, Recycle and Soundforge.

I've been recently messing around with Fruitykick and found it to be quite good for low-freq kicks (the ones that are pure bass and a click), but I was kind of disappointed at the lazerblip kicks (the psy ones). No need to say, the presets are weak.

Basically, creating a thwop kickdrum is really simple. Take a sine wave, at around 60-100 Hz, and apply a logarhythmic pitch shift, starting at +24 semitones and ending at -24 semitones. Cut the end of the wave which is going to be useless.

If you want a kick that sounds low, and not thwoppy, take a 100 Hz sine wave and do a pitch shift, but instead of using a logarhythmic curve, just use a straight one.

Unless you want pure bass frequency, layer some kind of click -any way you can- on top of it. The click you'll use will make the difference on the feel of your kick.

I'm kind of stuck now. I know both methods but I don't know how to make my kicks sound powerful. Does anyone know how do all the full-on pros make their kicks? I'm looking for different methods on making the kicks that Psydrop, GMS, and the minimal bands such as Tenka and Krumelur use. I don't want to rip records off, because I'm more interested in the synthesis itself and most of the recorded kicks are compressed, so they sound "wet" already.

Thanks dudes

Well , i guess , you can hardly reach the same quality with soft as you do in hardware synth or drum machine , but u can try to use synthesis tools in SoundForge           ____________________________________________

well, he can reach very likely quality if its all about drums.. i just dont understand why one should spend his time on producing new kick sound.. there're really TONS (thousands of thousands;) of free pre-made kicks over the net (im not talking about loops, im talking about stand alone kick sounds...)

run Reason, create only ReDrum machine
and run it - see what quality you reach with that, if you set correct volumes on the mixer

but the problem is to reach that commercial quality not only about drum sounds.. it must be good in total, while all the synthesizers come along with the drum kicks

best wishes with your music

Thanks brainstorm

The reason I want to spend my time producing a new kick sound is just because I'm interested in understanding all the steps of synthesis and compression that can be involved. This way I can just come up with a kick in my head and translate it to a WAV.

Also, I never found any good-quality kickdrums online... they're all housy or some different kind of music. I'm looking for GMS/Psydrop/Tenka/Shiva Chandra kicks... the most special ones. Do you have a source URL where I can find any?

Another thing to try is that same sine kickdrum synthesis with a triangle wave. The result is nice, it's a very dry thwoppy kick.

(BTW I picked that sine thing up from Infected Mushroom )

try this page, scroll it down.. it got more then 200 drum sounds and a few of them are pretty usefull for what you are doing..

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/475/audio_tools.html

but its really lame
the best thing - get on kazaa/direct connect and make a search for "samples kicks drums"
see what people have and im pretty sure you'll found a huge library of nice trance/goa drum
sounds

if you use Reason, look for these refills on the same sharing software:

"Old School drum machines.rfl"
"Here Come the drums.rfl"
"Killer Tweaks.rfl"

those are full with drum sounds.. really a lot of usable kicks

Nice... thanks for sharing that mp3.com library. So maybe it wasn't that awesome, but at least I replenished my sample collection

For example: I had too few ride cymbals (like 10 at most).
