i think at least some of you here use kick roll buildups (something like, 1st bar kicks every 1/16, 2nd bar kicks every 1/32, 3rd bar kicks every 1/64 and 4th bar break then BOOM... just some example).
my problem is that kick rolls clip really easyly, how do i do a proper mix suitable for kick rolls?
i have the kick sample with some offline compression. should i add another compressor? should i take off the offline compression and make it online? should i use a limiter?
whats the best way to do it in your experience?

thanks in advance

it's tough to make a 1/64 long kick with power

offline highpass e.q. - keep the low mids, get rid of some of the bass...
To expand what on what Orange said - use the audio envelope in a curve so it looks abit like what a lowpass e.q. with medium Q would look like (best way i could describe it heh )

You´re doing it in midi or audio? in audio is much easier to do like orange said, so you make sure kick do not overlap...also, like nikc said, remove the very low frequencies...

i'm using midi. the very low frequencys are already out (hipass at 30 or 40 i can't recall). i'll try with envelope... the envelope is already a ramp down but i'll try to make it more... altough i still think it will be difficult to keep the kick powerful. maybe it's time to change the kick sample or maybe i'll try with a bigger hipass...

thanks

i suggest first work with wav for this.

take the kick roll and simply fade out each one (16th need sometimes more fade out then 64th)
also u can lower -2db for the break. after nice limiting as master it sounds great if not its realy too much bass           www.sattelbattle.com

Exactly... the fade-outs are easier than messing with envelopes, you don't have another automation track to keep track of, and it's easier to immediately do a offline FX onto the roll, be that EQ or some other effect to spice things up.

use a sampler which has mute groups, like battery, and set up the mute group that the sample mutes itself. you can also use this technique - use two copies of the same kick - one standard for main beat, and its copy with very short decay for the roll. do not compress the rolls, you will use the effect of the roll.           http://myspace.com/voxproject

I use battery and just draw a nice velocity curve over the notes of the roll. It also means the sound has a nice flow.

if you r working on audio samples and not midi. just cut each event (every little kick) at the zero crossing point and to make sure add a small fade out. this should get rid of those nasty clips......           if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...
