I read this in one tutorial:
"
One well-known producer/
engineer typically records bass by compressing
both the direct and the amplified signal individually.
He then submixes the two signals to a bus and
straps a third compressor across that bus, then
returns the signal to the console before routing it
out again in combination with the kick drum, applying
a fourth compressor across the new combined
signal. And this is an engineer that always places a
stereo compressor across his mix bus - someone
who also, he avows, even relies upon his mastering
engineer to provide yet more compression. Sounds
like overkill, right? But this is someone who has
dozens of platinum records to his name."

So what you think about this?

well... it's not that hard to have a good bass in music styles that can go to platinum. most of the comercial eletronic music is compressed to hell.

anyone have some tips on getting a bassline harmonizing with the kick? i hear in professional productions the kicks mostly harmonize with the bassline. how do i make a kick fit so nicely into a bassline?

and anyone have some tips where to get some real good kick samples?

for the first , use your ears and eq .
for the second , check out some links in 'mother of all...'

beside that , i use 1 comp. for kick (not always) 1 for the bass (unless its vb1) and 1 on the bus/group which sometime i use limter instead , very good result and ok after master compression as well.

Yes but side kick is only ducking, and with bass notes playing a the same time as the kick, it sounds much better with sidechain compression (imho)

I'd like to mention that side-chaining is not limited for basslines.... It is a great way to make all kinda sounds and loops in your track to pulse together with something else. Try compressing / gating a pad with 16ths hihats in the sidechain for example

group compression of kick and bass means, that velocity of kick will fluctuate, this thing isn't good for any kind of trance (tuc-tuc-tuc-tuc)))

using side-chaining compression on bass chanell means that your rythm section will be dependent on compression options and more independent on your midi-velocity actions

here is the example of using kick'n'bass without of any kind of compression, just saturator+limiter on master (the second part of example show that kick could sound with bass at the same time)

HOpe this helps.....
Got this from Modernbeats.com as a quik tip

When mixed correctly, the kick serves as a solid foundation behind the whole production. However, what most engineers & producers do NOT know is that there is more to mixing kicks than mere choice of samples, compression settings, & EQ.

Hardly discussed at all, is the secret technique used by Pro's where the kicks in a mix are finely tuned to the first musical note (tonic) of a song's key. "What's the big deal about tuning a kick to the key of my song?" you might ask. Well, it's a very big deal! In fact, applying this technique correctly can set a producer apart from the sea of amateurs for evermore...

The fact is kicks DO have pitch, low frequency pitch. Therefore, in terms of a kick's pitch embedded within a song's own key signature, a kick can either work against or with the resonance of your entire mix. And perhaps even more important, without tuning a kick to the song's tonic, the entire output level of your mix will forever remain un-optimized!

What do we mean? We mean "out of tune" kicks equal a forced lower output due to low end pitch & frequency conflicts. In other words, you'll never be able to truly maximize the output of any mix until your kick resonates with the key of the song at hand. Once the kicks in a mix resonate where their pitched oscillations match the song's natural key & primary frequency, the song's dynamic range & output level potential expand greatly!

eg Bass (1st note) written in C and Kick in C.

I just tune my kick in Battery3.
