i allways try to fit the bassline into the kick, imo the kick is the basic of the track and makes your music so...

well to get some real good kicks i'll tell you to buy some samples cds, those with a lot of drums libraries.           http://www.myspace.com/boogieman

velocity changes of your bass fitting with the kick for 16th rumbly basses

good match of eqing the bass and kick to not interfere with each other in the mix

group compression/limiting

Generally I'll find the kick sound that I like and then the bass sound that I like. Then I will tune the kick up or down so that it 'fits' with the bass (just using my ear) - there's always a sweet spot that you just have to find. In Kontakt this is really easy using the tune knob.

You could use a spectral analysis to give you an idea of the main frequency of the kick and decide from that how much to tune it up or down, but as always what matters is how it sounds.

Send both the kick and the bassline to a group rather than to the stereo outputs.
Compress the group.

hey colin,

you could also use an fx channel too right? it would have a different dynamic on the sound, but wouldn't that be another way to do it?

You could do... but in a digital system it's generally not been a good idea to mix raw sounds with compressed versions (ie. send kick and bass to an FX channel then compress the FX channel, whilst still being able to hear the uncompressed version)... In the past this has meant phasing due to plug-in latency but I don't know how SX would handle this now it has full PDC. Could be the resurrection of yet another analog technique! (Bring on fx-feedback loops!)

That technique is very useful for mixing rock drums, by the way...

I think that kick needs a bit differnt compression than the bass. in other words: work on each part alone and dont use group channels.           check out! www.soundclick.com/spasm

Agreed, but sometimes it can be a good way to get the bassline to duck in level when the kick hits, keeping the bass end of a track from getting out of hand.

Other ways of doing this are using lower velocity bass notes, or even missing out a bass note completely if it falls at the same time as a kick, or putting a second compressor on the bass and side-chaining it from the kick channel, using as fast an attack as possible and tweaking the ratio and release until the bass 'pumps' nicely with the kick.

Right, but I still haven't seen a real Cubase solution to this on the forum. From what I understand, the side-chaining method is not available in Cubase. If you just send the bass and kick to a group and compress that, then it would work on the sum of the kick and the bass waves, which is not the same as compressing only the bass at the instant the kick hits. Or did I miss something here?

you can create your own kick sample in soundforge , thats what i used to do before i got the wonderful dsp synth "kick me" (for cremware soundcard).

Darclon if you have soundforge and you want to know how to do it P.M me and i'll explain to you.
