hello everyone.
i learned alot about kickdrums in the mother of... thread, but i got kinda stuck here.
i'm not a friend of layering because i cant figure out how to do it correctly - its beginning with the sample choice...
so usually i take good samples or simply make my own. but when i make my own they are always kinda thin and i wonder how you do it.
i tried to make a kick similar to one e-clip used in his track "life is enough" and i got close but its still not as gigantic as his.
here's what i made in zebra2 using comp, phaser and eq. what else could i do?
https://soundcloud.com/fungophago/kicktest
i simply cut his from the track and put it in there.

have you tried using BazzISM2 vst, it makes great kicks and is really simple, then just compress and eq. |

i was avin ago at different eq curves n comp settings using bazzism..My order seems to go like this, Pro Q , pulteck emu eq (sonEQ thanks pom),sonnox Dynamics, nomad Multimax and the LL3 multi seems to work ok as a processing chain for Bazzism "i hope"
multimax has a ceeling of -6 i make up the gain after using utility for the ll3 to catch, b4 the multimax the compressor attack around 15-30 with fast release gain reduction of bout 6db the make up is then able to be pushed in the multimax giving it nice results from the punch attack of the compressor...love the Multi max midrange eq.

Even the bazzism kicks arent punchy enough, so I put Amp (ableton guitar disto) behind it to smack that bitch hard, usually you don't need that much, experiment with dry/wet is necessary also not to much gain but more bass and some middle and treble not much presence
thats what i go for mostly
I don't know what other disto's are like but the ableton guitar disto is perfect for me
and as geom probably mentioned you need to eq ofc to shape the sound a bit
this one is bazzism + amp + eq and then routet together with the bass on an audio channel where I applied a compressor

heres it with bazzism way better and that distortion thing was a good tip too.
if i compress the bounced audio again i get that punchyness but if i try to do it before it sounds like crap... weird...

the headphones I guess...and yes, check your bass sounds and kick on your headphones, they reveal reverb e.g very good in comparison to monitors because you don't have a real room where it's played back then
wouldn't make any reverb on kick anway, keep it mono and tight

The thing using most kick generators is that they will produce a pretty much even (amplitude) pitched sine. A kick should have certain dynamic shape depending on style and taste.
Even if you use the zzism's envelope, EQ boosting the lows and highs to give the sinewave a defined contour is super good...
TIP: if you use a notch to cut (3-6db) from 300 - 800hz (depending on sound) you can better shape the kick by separating the highs and the lows.
Render to audio and check your kick's anatomy: it should have a clear "click" at the start (transient) some like to layer noise for this, i don't. Then check the tail and the curve between this parts.
I like kicks that sound balanced and well defined, curiously their waveform often looks good too. |

You cant get modern psy kick without using vst with 2 pitch envelopes.Bazzism needs little more processing to get it sound good as all other similar that have only one envelope.Try massive or adern kick me,way more control of dynamic shape and less post processing. In the end better is the kick,so is the bassline. |
