Both. First I make a kick that is tuned to the root frequency of the bassline. Then decide whether I am going to have a bass patch that is going to be a 16th pattern that will have a rest at every beat, or some different pattern that will play under the beat. Then depending on how much the filter opens at every trigger (and what leads, percussion come in later in the arrangement), I EQ (subtractive most of the times) and apply a modulation amount of the envelope that controls the pitch of the kick, accordingly, as I wouldn't wanna loose the click of the kick drum in the mix. And then depending on the bass pattern, I set the sustain of the tuned tail of the kick drum that has all the low end. If there is some space right after the kick, some sustain of the decaying tail, helps it blend nicely with a sparse bassline pattern (although I do that mostly for techno tunes, as the trance tunes I am involved with at the moment, are quite hectic).
There are the old tried and tested channel strip settings where things simply work and I quickly dial up a nice kick and bass channel strip and simply get on with writing the music, but that is how I go about creating them.
But I do think its nonsense asking if someone prefers kick or bass...they are both just as important and need working on just as do leads, percussion, arrangement...etc.
Any element of a track you choose to not work on at the best of your abilities, will be your weakest link and that tune will not sound good because of it... no matter how good I think my tunes sound, I always strive for progress. There is no point doing this if there was no room for improvement.
How many times where you excited about a tune you made only to come back to it months later and realize that it does not sound nearly as good as you thought it did back then?
Speaking for my self, many times!

Well, I was very interested in the answers only because I see here many Dark artists. and in this genere, I find that the kick is much more dominant then the bass (Maybe only in Volume). So, I decided to ask here and see if the domination of the Kick is also at the creation process.
Now is this good enough for asking questions in your forum? or should I sit quietly just because you think it's "dumb" ?!?

I don't like tunes that are bass light, its so much better to have a phat pulsating bottom end to get your groove on...then again at those extremely fast trance tunes that people call dark psy, there is so little space between the beats to fit 3 notes of the bass line and enjoy a rich bottom end. One of the reasons I am not into that music.

i was going to a friend one time and he played me his new track
when the kick came in i was shocked how fat it was
then he solo the kick and all u hear is the click like punch your nail against the table lol
it was all coming from the bass , that was playing full 16th line , only that you couldnt tell since this click was always playing with bass..
this was great lesson for me about frequency manipulation as well the relation of kick and bass in the sense of mixing process
the combo was good , but the k(l)ick when solo was not even more then tiny percussion

One time I write question in other topic for that method but I have only answer: "use sidechain". F**k! This is no answer! What have sidechain to this method?? :/
I hear it in other tracks. I love this but I cant do it good myself.
When I take low HP (on kick) I have a phase issues, when I take too much HP everything sounds shitty
Known You maybe any secret tips?? ;>

If you listen closer, you'd find a ramming, low and flowing bass "pad", which I dig ... hehe.
Bass "line" is for full-on, bass "pad" for dark.
Kapish?
as to the topic: it is a matter of variaty, if the kick dominates or bass. Take your pick.
