Today I got a pair of AKG K271s after reading abit around on the forums and I was making some trance with them today and discovered that all my kick drums sounds like CRAP.
There is awful noise and weird frequencies all over the place, alot of the time there is some weird click noise at the end, they just generally all sound messy and full of sounds you wouldn't want to hear, and not tight at all.
Also, it seems to be this way with every kick I have, even the ones from tsabeat and some other producers...whats up?
Sorry if this should go in the kickdrum thread..

hehe, thats the risk when you get good headphones.. or for that matter monitors..
yes many kickdrums has some sort of artifact, you have to pick the best ones and sometimes you have to filter out some highfreqs, but most important you have to make the kick start and end at zero crossing to avoid clicks and cracks.. a good idea can be to fadeout the ending, and be sure to trim the start of the kick so it hits straight away...
you see people use crap kicks, what they do is that they EQ them alot and shape their form with a compressor..
stylus, thomas penton, drumatic has some nice kicks.
also from time to time when you work intense with some elements you start to hear everything, just cause you focus on it... in another case you would probably not hear it, casue of other elements is masking the sounds... its like if you put a lead over vb1 you dont hear that annoying click sound soo much, well if the lead is masking properly.

Only the kick samples sound bad...other music is fine. No I don't have monitors
Yeah, I definitely don't notice it when I have other things playing, it just worries me.. for this project, I just found a kick with little or none of what i'm talking about, I didn't think it was possible that all the kicks I have are useless

I've noticed something like this before too, my headphones arn't anything special, i trust them less than i do my monitors, yet only on my headphones do i hear a crustyness in the highs of some of my kicks... I think it is actually often to do with the fact that some of these kicks were mp3's at some stage(or still are).
So i reckon either learn to make your own kicks (something I'm still plannin on getting round to) or sample a kick directly off a 16bit 44kHz cd...
all the dude ever wanted... was his rug back...

Yeah, I've been getting into making my own kicks lately, just had to reinstall everything and haven't installed SoundForge yet... although when I did that, they were never as 'fat' as the kicks I have from other people.

I had that problem with kicks too. Turns out I had to filter/EQ out more bottom end than I thought and that added more definition to the whole kick. |

i think its very possible to clean the kicks i uploaded back then... with time i discover lots of them can be cleaned more (try reduce some bass around 100hz-200hz to give it clean charachter .. and some mid also around 400hz-600hz)
anyhow.. i returned yamaha msp5 after having this problem... something not cool.. other gear sound good with the same stuff.. but it can be that u will end up having sweet sound if u clean all noises..
samll test , is that mid-range freq that keeps coming ? when u play only sub freq.. is it still there ? if yes its just may be too much sub for the headphones... need 8" for that

I have 'audiophile' Sennheiser 650's and all the kicks in my own music sound empty and sometimes nonexistant.
On monitors = fine
In car with sub = fine
Just when I thought it was the headphones, I play some commercial releases and they're sound great.
It's either my EQing, or the quality of the kick.
I'm going to make my own kicks and see what happens. |
