but if you do this, it can be hard not to have a jump in volume of eg the bassline when the kick drops out (if it ever drops out and leaves the bassline alone)

But I'm compressing everything anyways (peaks don't come only from kicks), so the bass alone will get a volume jump. And I don't notice any volume jumps here. Maybe depends on how strong you compress it. I think it's because I got a strong bass which gets compressed together with the kicks, so no effect on it.

i use multiband compressors on both the kick and the bass (separately) this gives me more control of the frequencies i want to compress. ordinary comp´s just mash all the frequencies but with for example the waves c4 you can choose as you want.
i find that there is little need to compress the overall spectrum in these sounds, since they operate mostly in the low and low mid ranges.
compressing things individually will give much better control but also use up more dsp.

It is very much advisable to compress kiks and basses, moreover it is definitely advisable to keep 'em both in one group and compress it as well if needed.

To Trip- compressing and mastering is two completely different things.. Most of the times compression on individual instruments that have big impact on the whole ( as a kik would b for instance ) is necessary in order to make the desired frequencies of the sound more accurate and fixed and so to fit the whole better.

To Mike - it's not necessarily needed to compress or put some heavy duty mastering effect ( such as Ultramaximizers for instance ) on the whole track.. If you have peak glitches in the track, fix it with the correct EQ or with compression / limiter etc.. applied to the sound that is the trouble maker... limiting the whole track is very easy, but doesn't bring you to good sound eventually... Learn how to deal with the problems u encounter and not how to outsmart 'em
