i use compresion in the kick sample cauz im always messing around alot with it, crazy resolutions fills, filter automations, pitching up or down, etc. I always add a lil bit of compression, to make the kick sound at the same level when all of this automations come into play.
cheers brothars!

Now you got the point here Freakuency !!!!
That s the goal: to give clear opinions about the compressor setting and it s technical explanations. All of the last answers from Zip and you really started making this topic helpful.
Let me ask you something: when you say that the kick is 200ms long, do we need to consider the it s length ? I mean, I ve read some people here saying that the correct stuff would be to take care of the length of the kick in order to make it not to invade the semi bars were the bass is. In other words: if you have the classical k b b b (4/4)(k=kick and b = bass)for each bar, the "k"length should not be long enough to hit the even the first "b" (2/4).
So, when you say about the duration of the kick in ms, are you considering a regular 140 to 145 bpm with this length I just told you or will you have to calculate again if you make your sample shorter ?
What kind of those information do you have to share about kick duration, cycle, or anything that should be considered before thinking on the compressors settings? I didn t know that a kick sample was 200ms long..

the one cycle of kick and bass - kbbb - in a 145 bpm track is about 410 ms. considering this, if you don`t want to overlap the first bass note (which is not a bad thing sometimes), the length of the kick should be (or better - i use) about 100 ms. i don`t compress my kicks - depends of the samples you are using. more often i compress the whole bassline in a group channel. too short kicks (20 ms and so) are imho too short to have enough punch. it can be an intention to sound like that though.

Here are some options to go around this issue:
For kBbb pattern, the bass note B (capital), which is located at 1.2, can be decreased in velocity. Another great solution is to use Sidechain compression.
or
you can also make your pattern like this: kxbb
(x=empty space/no note) and simply drop the offending bass note. |

Didn't notice this part when i first read your post and it's already late to edit my previous post, so I have to start a new one. Though, my previous post contains some useful information related to your question.
Ok back to your question. Yes, indeed, I'm considering that a track should be around 145 bpm. Since most of psy tracks are in this range (140-145bpm) and they use standard 4/4 pattern sequence, you should consider making or using a kick sample at approx. 200 ms in lenght, unless of course you don't have any other ideas.
