when i put a reversed kick right before regular one it kind of mutes the regular one unless theres a space between..
why is this?! please help they are not overlapping, the audio isnt playing at the same time.
ive tried so many things, is it from using the same kick for both?
and i cant take anything off the end of the rev.kick or it just looses all the 'punch'
what am i doing wrong??

you usually only want the first half or 2/3 of the reversed kick and not the whole thing I think

Really? You talk about the first or the second half of a rev kick. Because from my view what you want is the actual pitchbend ocurring at the last part of rev kick or start of normal click, that's where all the "sucking" happens...

+1
i think he wants it to "fade in".
that means you have to reverse the kick and cut the last part (try) - the click of the kick.

I suspect this problem is about your perception and not about physics. Instead of hitting "out of the blue", your kick comes right after the loudest point of the reversed kick. The perceived difference in volume between the kick and a split-second right before it is not nearly as great in this case, so your real kick sounds weak. Just my guess...

that's often the case, but i've also had kicks where it sounded awkward if i didn't leave the whole reversed kick in. it really depends...
(that's also why a sample would be important for this thread)

thanks for the replys!
cutting or fadingout has never worked for me it just looses that whole unfolding sound..
lowering volume works kinda but then its too weak??..
anyway i fixed the one in the track by changing the reversed sample & eqing..
but heres a quick example;
same sample used for both kick & rev.
1 - with space between (the only way it sounds ok)
2 - together (revkick takes over)
3 - together with TiNy bit cut off revkick (revkick really faint)

Make a combination of 1 and 3 - cut a bit of the end (high freqs) of the reversed, and leave a really tiny space in between. Like, 5% of what you have in 1. Don't forget to make a short fadeout in the reversed kick so you will not get clicks.

thanks! do u always use the same sample for both?,. and do you mean fadeout just the very last fraction where the 'click' is? to zero?

sometimes reverse kick and kick creates a phasing problem example 2
solutions are mentioned above or cut off the highs so the click stays solid, fading out the high part
and you can also pitchshift and move it a few ms back for a nice whip

I think your kick's pitch envelope doesn't drop fast enough. You shouldn't be hearing the high frequencies for as long as you do.
Not to say you can't keep it that way if you want to, it just means that a lot of things about how you normally treat kick drums are going to have to change.

you could also try to put a low pass filter on the reversed kick
