I try searching for a topic but with no luck. My question is: You just open up new project, make kick, make bass. Fit them together, then you are starting to build around that. What i need to know is at what levels you have kick and bass hiting. All i know about levels is that if you want to send your track to get it mastered you need -3db headroom. So when i was doing my "mixdown" for tracks that is when i take all levels down and make new gain structure. And give it some DIY master. I think i can get much more form makeing good gain structure as i go along. I don't want to touch kick and bass after finishing it for the first time. I know this is basic stuff but i would appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

it doesn't matter and of course depends on the track/style. -10db or -15db are good starting points for the kick (rather start lower if you for some reason don't want to move the fader later). why not look at your previous tracks and check what level the kick was there? but by all means forget the numbers and do whatever sounds good.

Thanks for quick response. I'm not that new to music production. But in past few months i feel in love with psytrance. I'm getting used to "surgical" approach of making music. Seen few tutorials like Mind Doctors Make Acid and Ryanosaurus showing his workflow (very inspiring video series). So i guessed that init levels are important. Always been more of a feeling than numbers fan. You are very helpful. Thanks again.

If you want a surgical approach, I'd say keep it (the kick+bass buss) at -10db, and mix everything around that.

Also, since psy trance has the kick+bass right in the front of the mix, it ends up being the loudest section. If you mix everything just right, later in the mastering process you'll end up boosting the whole tune (and by the norm of the majority killing all big dynamics..), setting the overall gain at a standard level and you mix will shine out with the same relative levels, so your kick + bass should be comparative with the rest of tunes out there.

But for a matter of coherency, you could keep it rather low, choose some value for yourself and stick with it across all your tunes.           Super Banana Sauce http://www.soundcloud.com/knocz

yeah mate good tip from knocz
if you wanna put allot of sounds in your track -10 or even - 12 db will do ! i think personly head room is very importent ! and mixing sounds is easer to the ears when you lower the levels ! if you put your kick and bass and -3db or -4 db your head room is less and many sounds getting trouble to come true ! less is better they say and i agree ! succes brother and welcome to psytrance
