So I'm experimenting with compressing my kick and bass together. What kind of settings would you use? Ratio, attack/release times etc. How much gain would you add on to the compressed signal?

For this kind of thing, what are the aims of A/R times? I've heard that they'll strongly influence the groove, so what would you use to get a consistent, rolling bassline and kick? (I'm looking to achieve a more pulsing bassline, compared to a sidechained pump.)

Whatever sounds good.

Research on how the parameters of compression work.. experiment.. there is no right answer to a question like this.

I don't think I would ever do this, but Zoopy said it all. Just do whatever sounds good.

And I agree that you kind of need to know what the parameters do to adjust them properly.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

after some years of trying for the best result, just of accident i came across with BuzComp's free GranComp.

i set it almost at all of my kick/bass group channels

more specifically i'm stuck on these particular settings (i know that there are no standard settings ESPECIALLY for an audio signal processor but try it yourself to hear the little magic )

for top left to bottom right:
reduction: tight
ratio: 3:1
atk: 10ms
rls: manual 30ms
stereo: off
locut: off
character: bright
maxx(gain): off
output: 0

as u come to think i forgot about threshold, i set it to a level so it just starts to reduct (even the slightest) my signal.

try it at least once, plugin is free. if u like it drop me a line, if not no probs

++ if u set reduction:fat and character:hot u will have a more loud and fat kickbass combo but it'll surely add colour to your sound u may not desire... or sometimes u will
limiter: off

I always compress my kick and bass together on a mono group.

Waves C1-sc mono, Bass Expander preset

Then I stuff them both through the Compounder.

So you compress the kick and bass buss twice? Do you use the bass expander circuit on the compounder as well?

Yeah, 'Huge' in with the control just a tad above 9 o'clock. It gives a really round fatness that I tune using pre-compression EQ; can't seem to get that particular effect any other way.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I gave the compounder a go when I was making breakbeats and I remember when using that inductor circuit that allowed the deep bottom end through the compounder, unprocessed, gave a sub that was all over the place. Obviously I wasn't feeding in a kick and bass buss, just tried it on individual bass and kick channels.
Anyhow, I got this lump of uncontrolable sub as a result...obviously I was not using it right.

I wonder if there is a way of recreating this effect in software by having two busses. One with the bass and kick compressed (and having the low end stuff high passed) and then finally adding the low end stuff, unprocessed to the mix.
