Is it better to use sidechain compression or cut the kick duration in sample editor because of interfering with first note of bassline? |

hey there..
some things that come to my mind:
a)your kick sample is just some ms long and you see (zoom in and simply look) it wont interfere at all it - not necessary
b)you want to put a bass note on every 1/16th ("bbbbbbbb...") and a kick on every 1/4th - necessary
also for that pumping effect in a lotta fullon and prog you need to sidechain.
i wouldnt say its better or worse... its kinda taste and in my humble opinion sidechaining is mostly overrated.

Try to fix the sound first, then side chain only if necessary. You can simply turn side chaining on and off as you listen to the loop and decide if it helps your sound. Compressors use a good amount of cpu, so don't use it if you don't have to.

Options:
Sidechain
Shorten kick
put bass note after kick on a seperate track and EQ out the clashing frequencies.
Automate an EQ to take out frequencies when the kick is playing.
Have a lower velocity on the note after the kick.
+anything you can think of.
There's not one option that's better than the other. It just depends on the sound you want.
Try everything then make your own mind up and don't let anyone call you a homo because you don't jump on a sidechain plugin as soon as you've programmed your bass. |

I am a sidechaining mad man!
I 'll do it even if it is not realy doing much to the bass. I like to round off the ending of the bass just a bit to open up more room for mid and lower frequencies for the rest of the tracks sounds.
I think people put to much energy working on the kick and bass to start with. Just get something sounding good together and work on the actual song. You can always come back at the end and work out the details, also with the rest of the sounds there you know what you need to work on as far as the small details.
It is just another one of those details that you'll have to figure out on your own if it works better for you or not.

Sometimes it´s not so helpfull shortening the kick length, cause the interference is between "end bassline and start of kick"(mostly because of bass release).
I tend to bounce the bass and trim the loop(or eq the interference bass sound). I´m not a sidechain freak... lol

What is better is what sounds better to you. It all depends what sound you're after, no technique is 'better' than another in that sense. |

I usually take care of that by adjusting the envelope in the bass...

Also also also!
It's cool to have a bassline made out of two layers, one all freq's under 120-160hz, which you add a sidechain to and all the frequency's above reamin untouched. |
