I know this has been asked before, but i searched and couldn´t find...

Considering a final mix at 0Db,

how loud is your kick and bass? (I know this will depend on their loudness, etc, but average...)

I normally have my kicks at about -2/-3 Db and bass about 2db lower than the kick...but i´m not sure if thats to loud in order to have whole mix bellow 0db...so what do I do? Do I just put the master fader a bit lower or should the master be always at 0db and lower all the other sounds in order for the mix not to clip?

Thanks in advance for your time

kick -6db\-8db
bass -7.5db\-10db

and then group them to cpmpressor/limiter and make sure output is around -7db\-6db.
then there is inough space to mix more leads fx perccusions etc.

sorry for the dumb question guys..but how would i analyse what db i'm mixing my kick & bass in fruity loops for example?

I tried putting the fruity db meter on the seperate kick & bass channels but that doesn't help..           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

yeah RMS would make more sense... maybe.

but i just go by peak on the track.

although, actually, when you think about it, the bass and kick are gonna be pretty squashed, therefore you have consitent and predictable peaks, and therefore peak is a reliable reference.

kick -7/8dB
bassline -7/10dB

well RMS can be felt by ears, peak cannot it's good to have a reference of the peak so that you know when you're compressing too much or increasing the volume too much.

Kick at -6 and bass between -9/-3, Peak. I change compression and/or programming if the transients take too much headroom. Also depends on perceived loudness tho.

dumb question... when you say the volume are you talking about the volume shown in the kick\bass channel or the value shown in the master? cause cubase has a 3db decrease when passing a channel to the master channel (right?).

when i said right it wasn't a direction but an adjective well just checked that and it's equal from the channel to the master. maybe it was a SX2 thingie or settings thingie

Actually when I look at most pro tracks in Soundforge, the kick is usually closer to -2dB! On some it is even higher. That is looking at the peak level of the kick during the intro when no other sounds are on top of it. The bass level varies depening on the style.
