It seems to me that if you don't gain tracks appropriately as you go then you will eventually be faced with a gaining stage to your workflow process. I think the gaining stage can fix all these issues people are bringing up about the mix being too quiet. If you compose everything and it sounds too quiet but your K/B relationship is whack then you can always gain everything appropriately so that each track works relative to another and then just highlight all tracks and gain them down to get your headroom back on your master fader. Then, simply turn up your monitors. However, I personally would never move my master fader below 0 and use a limiter to compensate. There's really no need to limit it when you could avoid it by using some simple mixing etiquette. Of course you don't want any clipping along the way in any plugs or channels but as long as you're taking care of your clipping before exporting I really don't see it mattering what stage of the process you're in as long as the track is gained appropriately before rendering. (unless of course you are freezing and flattening tracks which are clipping before doing this gaining...) I would say don't over think it, just make sure you don't clip and make sure before you render out to gain appropriately.
As far as on topic... I think Knocz nailed it early on. Everybody has their own style and their own opinion on what sounds good. If I always followed the same formula, the kick and bass relationship of every track would be pretty similar, if not totally the same. I think it really depends on what the track needs. Don't let some numbers or a rule dictate your mixing decisions. Let the song tell you what needs to be done next. Just my 2 cents. |

So now the question to be asked is what db would be my beats and percs compared to the kick n bass if its -10db and -8db for example. |
