i am a little

i read that kick and bass are best in mono. What about snares and hi hats?
If the instrument(VST) cannot be opened in MONO, i have to send it to bus and switch to MONO there ?

Then i apply some plugins like low pass filter, compressor...... do i have to do this at the BUS?
And EQ, better before or after all the other plugins?

Thanks to all of you,

It's true what u heard, kik n' bass there is no reason whatsoever to use them as stereo ( unless u have rare cases when the bass in his stereo image has something very special in it - happens sometimes with a little high pitched bases )

Snares, Hi Hats and most of the percussion can easily be monophonic, there is again almost no reason to use stereophonic sounds for it unless the snare has certain unison on it or extremely wide stereophonic image u want to keep. Actually it is much better to use them mono, cuz u can pan them right or left and in that way create very nice and open sound.

About VSTi - it depends on the sound - if it is a unison sound, or has couple of different oscillators in it and / or it is a sample that sounds 'wide' there is no need at all to create mono wave from it, it will make it shrunken and less potent.. Some sounds should / have to be stereophonic.

Eq imo is the best to use at the insert of the sound itself. It should be applied as a first in a chain ( not always again but most of the time ). Compressors can be used on a whole group, and create very homogenic feeling especially for those that doesnt use premade loops but take their parts by themselves and create patterns - it makes all the nu loop to sound like one ( if u do it right ofcourse ). It is highly advised to take all the hi hat parts and route them ( after EQ, and small room for instance ) to a group, in which u can compress them, add more eq, add more reverb etc..

This u can do ofcourse to any other group of close related sounds

Good luck!!

this wants to say that I can use a compressor with the same adjustments for as many different timbres?

as well as a compressor for hi hat, more snare and plus some another one?

Try to take an open hi hat track, closed hi hat track, shaker / tambourine track and route them all to the same bus. On each one, separately create EQ that defines each part... After that, u can go to the bus u have assigned the channels to, and create a compression over all the group and afterwards u can add a reverb to the chain...

u can also put individual small rooms on each and every one of the channels, chained after the EQ           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

the human ear cannot percieve the directional source of low frequency sound. thats why people can put their subwoffer under the bed...
so there is no benefit on using stereo low frequency sounds. u can only damage the mix by creating unnecessary phasing...
so i guess its better to use mono
