I generally try to avoid limiting and only use it as a last resort. many problems can usually be solved with an eq or with other means! Also I usually end up with a master channel around -6db or so...

Same here - I always try to avoid using limiters/compressors if possible. And never on the master channel!

I keep the levels around -3 usually. Depends on what Im using for a bass...
I read in a thread somewhere around here, talking about Penta's basses, where he replied that he doesn't EQ his bass, which sounded cool to me so I tried it. Sounds good and dynamic. He recommended everything BUT the bass to be EQ'ed 'around' its peak frequencies. I think Im going to be doing that from now on...
I send the k/b to their own track with Renoise's 'Mixer EQ' (3band with mid freq and Q settings) and usually up the low slightly, mids more than low, and hi end I decrease a bit if necessary. No compression or limiting, I try to use that on individual tracks and only if necessary, which usually its not. I put a maximizer on the final mixdown (thresh set around 1-2 db above the peak, out ceiling -0.1db) but thats it. I find that proper EQing does a good enough job bringing out each element and helping em mix the way I want.
Sometimes, very very rarely, Ill put a multiband comp/lim on the final mixdown if something is peaking too high, though a paragraphic EQ usually does a better job getting rid of/emphasizing whatever freqs, or sometimes a BP filter (Renoise has a nice setting on its filter that pretty much sets brick walls above and below the BP with nice sharp edges) on individual tracks if frequencies that aren't necessary to that sound are getting in the way of other elements' freqs.
