oh,
i did not want to move the fader on the master because i misunderstood something i read on from Nick Thomas 'guide to mixing'
i just dug it up again;;

"You might turn it down to add headroom. Instead, you should turn down all of the tracks going to the master bus by an equal amount, or turn down the input gain on the master bus, because if you add headroom by adjusting the master level fader, then the headroom adjustment will occur after any insert e®ects on the master bus, which is not desirable."

of course i only realize now, this only matters when you have effects on the master.

Besides which, in Cubase at least, the first six insert slots on the master fader actually come before the fader itself, so master fader movements make no difference to their levels at all.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
