There is a program called Antares autotune which I use to determine what key a sample is. You can do this then tune 100 cents for every 1/2 step whichever direction you are trying to go.
If anybody knows of something better than autotune please mention it here.
Edit: I mostly use it when I'm making kicks to set the root frequency of the kick. http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

Can't you run the instrument you are trying to tune through a spectrum analizer to check the frequency that's in ? And then, as an example, if the root key of ur song is G# just tune the instrument to the frequency that corrresponds to that note. ?

I have not been seriously through this tuning by frequency to be honest, but today just went around my friends and we had a quick check on this...
For example, a synthesizer we were using when playing the A note and checkin' on a good spectrum analizer as izotope, it showed a bit far away from the 440 hz (the only one i know that corresponds to A), it wasn't right on 440 because of the oscilators, detuning etc.. on the machine, which is normal..
But i just think, tuning by frequency is important because u get to make a track with everything perfectly in tone, including percussion, and as u are sure of the tuning of ur song you can then detune and do all that crazy stuff with synths to create harmony etc,. as you know. But first it makes sense for me to have to have a solid foundation before detuning stuff...
You pple get my point!!
(gotta go bit deeper on the subject, as soon as i have time)
Thanks

yes but u wuldnt detune your oscs and basic fundamental effects like maybe good set compressor just to have the exactly 440hz.. Or another note.
thats my prob so far,I cannot tune my kicks really so far.Antares Autotune is a nice hint.Cheers

Don't tell me you analize/record your percussion with melodyne.. I mean, it doesn't analize drums, not accurately..
I know for self experience, and some other people as well..
Does it work with you?
I tried before, just to se if it would detect the pitch/note of a certain percussion instrument, and sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't... It would have been cool for me, just to know what key a drum shot is, so i could then place it on it's fundamental note on the sampler keyboard and use other pitches..
Isn't quicker and nicer to check the freq on a good analizer???

where is there above something with melodyne and drums??
you can do wonderful things in melodyne with vocal tracks..
and I will go for that Ive a few nice hehe
And autotune antares is not melodyne for sure.I make a short pause now but when back I check that.
and ti check the freq its not a problem ,better wavelab than a simple analyser but works of course. https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden |

Yeah, for vocals, afterall that's what it was made for isn't it..
Tough u were on about somethin' related to non melodic stuff like some drums, because this thread kinda started with kick drum or somethi' and those freq diagrams..
Yeah, melodyne must be a hell of a tool for those singers who couldn't stay in tone..
I just wouldn't want to see them live..jeje
By the way, some day we recorded my digeredoo, done somethin' with it in melodyne, to stay in tone (chetting..lolol), and used it as a bass line, it was interestin'....
Peace

Im not a singer but I will use it with pleasure .. for experimentsn not for anything else, becaue mine was long enuff and it has its onw for ages. When it comes to vocals I do nod need any help for my purpose and I never was in need of any help.
.I would rec my didge only maybe if even through a lil of wet reverb maybe even a special delay but not for tune from d to a or so.But I know what you lookin for,the same as me to tune our kicks.peace bro.
