well i understand it, i will take a shot...
the thing is there are as many scales as you want really! let us imagine that we are always in C...
the two basic scales from classical music are:
major:
C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
minor (harmonic, i shall ignore the melodic):
C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B, C
the most basic scale from rock/etc (the blues scale):
C, Eb, F, F#, G, Bb, C
They're the most common scales (or 'modes') available, in general. Common notes which will "stick well and give a great result" typically include particularly the third, fifth and seventh notes of your scale (Eb, G, Bb in the blues scale for example).
These 3 scales are not necessarily best for psytrance though - like I said in my earlier post - I prefer darker weirder more world-music sounding modes, with flattened 9s (Db's), sharp 5s (G#s) and all that kinda fun stuff.
So my honest recommendation is simply to use your ear, play any combination of notes until you find ones which sound good! Then having identified your personal scale for this track (it doesnt have to have 8 notes in, u might choose just 4 or 5, and it doesnt matter if you know whether its called the lochrian or phrygian or what), stick to it, and make all your synths/pads/etc follow these notes.
Thats my technique anyway, hope this makes some sense
