I've seen some producers use books as stands for their monitors...Is this simply to make them higher, or can it improve the accuracy of the sound by keeping the monitors between another hard surface that they'd vibrate against? Should the monitors stand completely on the stand/book or can the rears of them hang over a bit? |

I don't know how good a book would work. But I use some Foamzorb IsoMon, to reduce the vibration transfer to my desk. It really helps, and my neighbours can't hear anything, even when i'm playing really loud...

The more solid the better. Books might wobble. The point of stands is to prevent the speakers moving backwards and forwards when the air is pushed away from the cones. Speaker cabinets also have a resonant frequency, and this can be transferred through solid objects, you don't want your desk humming along with your song!
A little padding (usually soft rubber) that sticks to the underside of the speakers and on to your stand will prevent vibration, the stand will then stop the speaker moving back and forth.
Tweeters should be at ear height.
If you have stands with spikes on the bottom and they are on carpet, don't forget to push down on the top of the stand until it is firmly IN the carpet.
For hollow stands it is suggested that they are filled with lead shot or sand to prevent more movement. I haven't done this yet with mine.. simply because I don't have any lead or sand lying around! Anyone does this and got good results?
I bought these and I love them. Solid, good looking, nice assembly and you can hide the cables up the inside.

Hmm, books dont seem to be a good idea because they are made of wood. And wood is definitely bad at stopping sound vibrations. (see all the wood that is used in instruments!)
It will give some improvement compared to putting directly them on a table but the effect can be much better with little trouble.
2 things about speaker stands:
1) It can work as an acoustic isolator. That way the table you work on will not be directly driven by the speaker vibrations. Otherwise your whole desk is one big speaker cone!
2) It puts the speakers in line with your ears. This is usually how monitor speakers are designed to be used so it is a good idea to put them at ear heigth.
I have my monitors on a separate table.
They sit in plastic containers filled with sand (in a plastic bag).
This seems to give the speakers a new kind of transparency compared to (what i used to do in the past) putting them on books or stacks of magazines.

I believe the reason why the monitors are usually mounted higher is so that any equipment that may be on your desk (keyboard, midi controllers, synths, etc) doesnt get in the way of the sound. Did you know that the brim of a baseball cap can put a notch in sound frequencies at around 1.4khz? Its best to try and eliminate any obsticals that could affect the sound in any way.
As for books vs. stands, i dont think theres a difference.
That is my best guess.
