I try to keep my kick at -6.5db, but when I have build-up rolls where the kick is chopped up into 8th and then 16th, the volume jumps up by around 4db which isn't good. How can I keep those rolls at the same amplitude the kick is normally at? I use Battery 3 and Cubase SX3 |

Make sure your kick's envelope release is set really low. The kick is overlapping itself, that's why you have an increase of volume on the channel.

Volume shouldn't change unless they are overlapping, or you have nasty clicks from cutting them without a fade (non-zero-crossing)
In battery try copying the kick to a new cell, make it a bit shorter and use that one for rolls. |

Thanks guys...Tomos, what's zero crossing and when should I use a fade on audio? |

Seamoon, I assume that for the best quality, the zero cross should be lined up exactly with where you want the event to start? |

thats not always possible...best thing imo is to do those rolls on a seperate audio track, this way the sample stops when the next one starts
and just if you get clicks caused by non zero overlappings, you should do a tiny fade out so the clicks disappear...but be careful, with too big fade outs kicks loose their power very fast...
but like I said, in general I take a seperate audiotrack for rolls (and also an audiotrack for the real kick, cause midi sucks for kicks imho )

I load a kick into a sampler and it cuts the notes to the appropriate length based on my MIDI note choices. No chopping, no non-zero crossing, no problems. Any volume changes are minimal and can be resolved with a compressor. It also allows for easy pitch bends. |

Cool, thanks guys...Hazak, what are the real advantages of using audio over MIDI for percussion? |

i've also noticed a strange thing:
i often put a reversed kick right befor a normal kick (e.g. before/after a break) and with some kicks the volume gets about 3db louder, but with some kicks nothing happens and it stays at the same volume.
can somebody explain this?

chemogen, I meant the kick...my percussion is midi from a multi-instrument
I think its mainly about taste, but I like it to have more visual control...some people like to have those sampler functions, but I dont really need it for the kick also I think the beat should be as tight as possible, and if I'm correct midi has not always the best latency...but I could be wrong on that and it doesnt really matter for me
seamoon, I think this is also caused by overlapping, possibly cause the timing is not correct...just use audio for that and you got no problem

if you use audio for kicks, and the reversed kicks (no sampler), and if you set the reversed kick exactly that it ends when the real kick starts and cut the audiofile there, there shouldnt be any raises in volume caused by the reversed kick (sorry for that complex sentence )
