I'm not quite sure what to say. I'm flattered... I programmed most of ONYX. The Kurz's are fantastically deep synths and this set is aimed squarely at the types of music that this forum specializes in.

I've enjoyed the set myself, though I must admit that it served more as a teaser of what the k2000 is possible of - once I started playing with the sounds and seeing how they were put together I spent more time reworking them (as any good synth-junki would).

That being said, if you have a K2000/k2500, this is a great set of patches!

PS While you're here Puppeteer, I've had a Kurz question that you might know the answer to. If I throw a LPF on a basic saw wave and give the resonance a boost it sounds really good - except when the filter sweeps past the key I'm holding. I'm trying to find a way to avoid these 'hot spots' as they are a little unpleasant. Is there a way to level it off and get a nice smooth sweep? I could use a compressor to level it off, but I swear I read somewhere about how to keep it level inside the synth.

Thanks!

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the quick review. Part of the aim of the set was to show people what sort of sounds are possible on the Kurz's. The hard thing about programming sounds is that you have to decide on what final settings you use, because there are so many that you can choose, especially on a Kurz.

I tried to set the sounds up so that they automatically map to your MIDI Clock (so can be used at any tempo) for both the VAST programming and the Effects. The K2000 set was limited by the effects available, whereas the K2600 set has a lot of KDFX programming. On the K2600 I used a lot more controllers than on the K2000 set, because of the additional sliders.

Be sure to try both sets in your synth. You'll miss out on the KDFX, but the sounds themselves are different in both synths. I hope that you got some good ideas from the sound set, and I hope that you find some sounds very useable.

My favourite is in the K2600 set, called Allpass Analog, where I use the allpass filter to create a unique sweep. It sounds fantastic through the KDFX chorus and using the data slider and the modwheel, there is a very broad range of sound twisting possible. It's one of my favourite lead sounds.

I'm working on a new set now, building on what I learnt doing ONYX. I'm about 10% through, but I'm liking the sounds so far.

Anyway, back to your problem, I did post a reply over at sonikmatter.com, but basically you could try to pad the sound into the filter, and then turn it up afterwards, you could use a FUN or the keytracking on the resonance, you could also try keymapping in the amp block to reduce the upper end volume. Try the 4Pole Filter with separation, and play with the separation to carve out a custom rolloff response and another one I thought of, just now is to try assigning keytracking to the cutoff frequency, so that each key essentially has it's own filter response.

You could also try duplicating and detuning the layer. That will soften the sound somewhat. Also EQ will work wonders, if you also keytrack that. You could use the Parametric EQ available in the Digitech processor to get a narrow notch to track with the keynumber.

It's tricky with resonant filters on sounds with a strong fundamental, because the fundamental is naturally louder than the surrounding frequency's. You could drive the filter harder (by puting a gain block in front of it) and push the filter to near clipping. This will compress the signal, but it will probably distort too. It might sound good, and it might not.

Cybernaut (in ONYX) is one sound that uses the internal clipping to create the sound. The growl in that sound is due to the buss being overdriven.
