Okay, time to admit something very shameful.
Years ago I fell in love with Shpongle (that's not the shameful part - who hasn't?) and realized that I wanted to write music that was that... different. Music that defied genres and made people, trance-heads and rednecks alike go "wow, what *is* that?"
I made a list of all the hardware that was used on the first album, hoping to acquire some of the tools used to craft what I consider to be a masterful album.
A few months ago I came across a *good* price on a K2500RS and, having no outboard sampler, decided to buy it.
Yes, I bought a piece of hardware that I have *no* idea how to use, solely because it was used to make the first Shpongle album.
*hangs head in shame*
(my only consolation is that I could sell it on eBay for a profit, but still, the principle is the same... )
I have a manual that's half a foot thick, an intimidating interface of far too many buttons and too many possibilities, and no IDEA what I'm even going to use this thing for...
So, anyone know what this thing is good for? Is it good for twisting samples, or synthesis, or...?
What should I look to use it for? |

now this is really funny man !
y do u want to buy a hardware sampler mate ?? when technology today allows for vst samplers like kontakt and halion to be used right within your sequencer ??
respect .. boom ! |

I have this sneaking suspicion that the K2500 engine can do more than software samplers. There's something about FUN algorithms, and mangling...
a hunch? Something told me to buy it - I listen to somethings.
But yeah, it's funny... or pathetic, one of the two.
peace.. |

Hi Fuzzi,
I used to own a K2000R for exactly the same reason. I heard posford was using it so i though i'd get a slice of the action. Unfortunatley i never had that much joy with it but i'm talking about the K2000R so maybe yours is much better ?
Anyway, i did get some good sounds out of it but the one thing that hindered my creativity with it was the fact that i never had it scsi'd to my harddrive so i was relying on floppys to store sounds.
The modulation facilitys and filters on this sampler are v.good and i'd definatley try to
crack the machine before you sell it.
Here's a link that might help, good luck.

My guess is that it's pretty fast compared to plugin samplers, so maybe you can use a midi-drumpad, a midi-guitar or a midi-keyboard to play samples realtime. This might be nice for recording stuff and practicing grooves. You practice playing a groove with the sampler, and when you played it perfectly you can use the midi-information to play other sounds.
And it probably looks cool in your studio as well. |

Ohhhh, good call! I have an MPD16, but it's not the fastest thing w/software samplers. I'll bet I could hook it up to the Kurz and have a go at it.

Oh my *GOD* you're right! I had never considered the emotional benefit of having this 50lb piece of hardware stoicly perched on my little rack like some guardian of the studio to guide me on my musical endeavors. I shall have to remember to make an altar for the God of Kurz and make an offering of rice and ganga prior to every musical excursion.
All hail Kurz!

Thanks for the link!
I think the K2500 has more memory and such, but I'm not sure what is different on it than the K2000. Hopefully this winter I will have more free time to sit down and learn how to use it.
peace,

fuzzikitten: don't listen to the "know nothings" that will tell you that *their* software will do whatever your hardware does
most of the times they're so stuck in the limitations of their software they would know a real good sounding instrument even if it banged on their head...
software is cool but hardware RULES...
and, yes, i do my livin' as a software developer...
also, do be ashame of living up to your dreams...
but some of those soft-synth trolls should be ashame of the warez in their drives |

I think software has only begun to harness its true potential. Software will never be better at analogue sounds I think, but I *do* think it can be better at customization/modification/etc etc that a box of wires and resistors cannot do.
The fact that you can redo the entire structure, a la Reaktor, is where I foresee software synthesis going. Soon we won't be able to listen to a song and go "oh, that's a such-and-such synth" because it could be any number of modified softsynths.
But for right now software is still trying to figure out why it's not hardware.
So it seems.

the problem is that some soft synth/sampler creators don't know waht a good sampler/synth is to start with
i'll never let go of my emu 5000 ultra... or other gear i own...
hardware can last for your entire life... vst stuff will end when another standard takes hold ! |

A friend has a Kurzweil... he uses NNXT.
a K might sound better, but a softone is already plugged, so...
they both have pros right? |

fuzzi, i have had a k2000 for a few years. Actually i bought it because of simon too The ONLY thing i dont like about it is that envelope programming is a bit tedious. The sound quality is like god.
I wouldnt even bother useing it as a sampler, its a killer synth in its own right. try setting up a patch that uses a sawtooth as a keymap, algorithm 1, go to the parametric eq in the algorithm block. Set the cuttoff on the parametric eq to the mod wheel.
thats one of simons leads right there.

actually i just found this now:
http://community.sonikmatter.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20016
its a sound set for the k with more VA/modern style sounding patches. the demos sound pretty nice, there isnt much else patch wise that sounds very modern for the k so i would just take the dive in on that soundset. the guys that programmed it are the VAST masters. |

I'm not quite sure what to say. I'm flattered... I programmed most of ONYX. The Kurz's are fantastically deep synths and this set is aimed squarely at the types of music that this forum specializes in.
I write Trance, Ambient and some other genre's and this set represents some of the sounds that I've used over the last few years.
