So, inspired by that 'let's stretch out one of Bieber's insipid pop songs with Paulstretch and make an ambient masterpiece' internet meme thing going on, I decided to play around with the same song and see if I could make something interesting. I'm not saying it's good. But it was fun to do, as a sound design exercise.
So every sound except for the kick and the bassline is derived from Justin Bieber's U Smile. Let me know what you think.

I actually thought about that tonight at work. I was doing all the sound design stuff night before last in a hurry in between feeding our 5 month old and trying to get some dishes done. So yeah, the ideas aren't really fully fleshed out.
The background metallic 'pad' thing is a small section fed into Mammut, this really neat program that can do some ungodly processing and manipulations to sound files.

No prob. I have a little pocket USB sound recorder that I take everywhere. I record everything (construction behind our building at work, the sound of the frogs croaking down by the pond at the park by my house, a convoy of army trucks passing by on the highway, etc.) and slap it thru Mammut or Paulstretch and voila, interesting instant organic soundscapes. DIY. A small bit of processing and I've got really usable stuff. Probably the best 40 bucks I've ever spent.
