A very basic question, but what in your opinion is the best software to use with a Mac G4, for music production.
Cubase, Logic, or Reason?
which one is better for what kind of things?

isnt Cubase more advanced?

I have never used Logic...so I couldn''t answer that.

I just switched to PC, and I use Cubase SX2 and I like it, it is very powerful. It is a bit complicated, but I like it.

I have some friends who use Reason and write some amazing stuff, but I personally think it is too toy-like.

I have used Digital Performer on MAc for many years, and I love that program. One problem is it doesn't support VSTs, although you could use a plug in called VST Wrapper, but I never used it. Many of the Software synths and effects are coming out as Audio Units which DP4 does support. If I had a choice I would DP4... but they dont make it for Windows. I'm also a bit biased since I used it for so long and I know that program so well... I hope this helps good luck!           -xo Truffle Radio ox-

first, you want to divide the three softwares into 2 categories:
1) logic/cubase => lots of functions, steep learning curve
2) reason => limited set of functions, easier to learn.

on a mac you propably want to use logic in stead of cubase.
preferably logic 6 pro.
you get all the nice emagic plugins with that.
the point is that apple is the owner of emagic (the makers of logic) so logic is very specialized in mac at the moment.
cubase is basically a pc program which is ported to mac.
but both have similar levels of functionality.
cubase is, as far as i know, more user friendly in the beginning, but logic will give you the most flexibility in the end.
personaly i realy like logic but enough ppl think that cubase is better.., so., it's up to you.,

the big difference between cubase/logic and reason is that both cubase and logic have much better functions in the sequencer (the song making screen).
reason is more like cubase from 1992 or so in this departement.

another differnece is that in reason you can't add new types of instruments. you can only use what you get with the program. so there is a good chance you will grow beyond reason and will switch sequencers sometime in the future.,

both logic and cubase can use plugins for new synthesizer and effects.,

reason can be a good learning tool but you propably will have to learn a bigger sequencer someday.

logic has *a lot* of opions/functions but is more technical and the learning curve is very steep.
but the rewards are great. you can do amazing things with it.

reason is much simpler, more towards fast/dirty work and easier to learn.,
problem is that you cant realy expand it and it misses a lot of advanced/handy functions., (like audio recording/editing/playback)

so they all have good and bad points.,

you have to choose : are you going to learn to swim in a bathtub or are you going jump into the deep end of the swiming pool .,

i jumped in the deep and am happy for it.,
other ppl like to practice/swim in the shallow and actually win gold medals!.

it's also about how much time you want to spend learning the tool.,

and before i forget,
please check out other sequencers as well!.
there are many more than reason/cubase/logic.
Digital Performer is a very nice one for instance.
but there are a lot more.

hope this helps a bit.,
greets.,
aka.,

i use BOTH Reason & Cubase together (there's an option to link between them).
getting very powerful tool, but if you're asking about only 1 app you can choose, i'd take Cubase, coz there are about unlimited options, thousands of VSTs, while in Reason you got only few synths & effect.

but again, i really love Reason, GREAT proggi, try them both you'll see what i mean
