hey,
just after everyone's opinion. Firstly who compresses there basslines? Also, do you side-chain your bassline with your kickdrum everytime?

I don't always compress my basslines. In fact, more often than not I leave them alone or compress very lightly.
I do almost always sidechain compress it with the kickdrum though. However, I am making downtempo where kick and bass are allowed to be on the same beat. (God forbid this be done in psytrance!) |

I always sidechain compress my bass. Even in downtempo. Makes it peak less

Compressing always, from lightly to hard.
But sidechaining almost never, mhh, maybe i should do sometimes when bass is pn every 16 note.
I often play bass and kick at some time, but thn i do good eq and it fits good then.

Depends on the effect i'm after and on whether the source needs compression. Sometimes i use side-chain compression to beef up the Bass. Sometimes i route the bass through a compressor with the high freq of the kick as a side-chain input, sometimes i use compression on a group with both kick and bass in it. Sometimes i compress to give the bass a certain nasal tone. Just experiment with compression and hear what you can accomplish with it. |

I always compress, from barely anything to a lot - depending on what kind of kickbasskick feel I want. I always have a sidechain between the kick and bass.
Heck, I compress almost anything - just to get a handle on the sound and tweak it better.
If I'm doing a full-on style bassline I tend to compress more than if I am doing a slower, funkier bassline.
But I think I'm getting tired of compressing the bassline ALL the time (sounds good, but not great) and view it as a stepping stone to better EQing as EYB said. |
