about the Prodigy thing,

it was mixed on a analog mackie desk,.

to quote the SOS magazine's interview with Liam Howlett:
"The first mixer i ever bought was a Mackie CR1604, which I got when I was a teenager, and i've now got a (Mackie) 32:8 analogue eight-bus console that i love because it gives us our distinctive Prodigy sound."

Not to mention all the analogue outboard gear. The article mentions Fairchild compressors, Culture Vulture, Culture Phoenix compressors etc. I can spot the following in the racks: Pultec EQ, Focusrite ISA, Oram EQ, something from Avalon etc etc ...

...and Liam apparently binned everything he;d written in that studio in favour of tracks written on Reason whilst he was watching telly in bed.

I think the album was mixed on Pro-Tools, though.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

"Caution man you are entering a very dangerous area"

hehe., i know.,
but you should know me well enought to know i would never enter being unable to defend myself

", we can go philosophical on this forever. "

sure, but what i said was not ment to be philosophical

"I personally believe that the world is digital and not analog. It's just the resolution is so high that you don't notice it. "

posibly true, however in our scale of things it does seem to be all fluid (and possibly completely wavy in the first place)
personaly, i'm still not sure wether we live in a particle, wave, or both type-of-universe.,.,

"As for the special character that analog desk are adding to the sound, well it's some sort of cheating isn't it?"

hmm., imo not cheating as the analogue desk is the best means for achiving that kind of sound.,

"And btw, ask any classical music technician what gear does he prefer the answer would be in 99.8% of the time: digital, the newest and the cleanest possible."

well, if you would ask a bit further you would realise that they mean clean and digital in the transfer/playback departement.

the people actually doing the recording swear by analog in every one but the final step.,

"So it is arguable. "

well, the pro's and cons are definitely arguable.,
what isnt IMO is the fact that at this time in space it's cheaper to have an actual analog desk than to make digital equipment that completely recreates what is being done to the sound in the analog mixer.,
convolution can do it i belive but you'd need that on every channel and then some so (at least for the time being) it doesnt look like a better solution.,

wether we want our digital equipment to sound like old analog equipment is again debatable

So we won't be going philosophical on this?
You were 100% correct. Let's get analog!           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

He binned the stuff he wrote in his own studio. The analogue gear I mentioned was in The Mews Studios and the Whitfield Street Studios where the album was mixed.

Originaly the Pro-Tools session was sent through the Mackie desk to create stem submixes. These stems were then going to be piped through the Neve console at the Whitfield Studios to get a bigger sound.

Once Liam heard the sound of the Neve, he remixed the whole album entirely on the Neve console.

In other words, don't expect to get this kind of sound from just using Reason.

well the bottomline is WAT U PAY FOR IS WAT U GET ///

when using software for production only.... i feel there is always some compromise with the quality , feel and crunch of the final mix .....

but this doesnt mean tht one cannot produce a good sounding mix with only software .... i know guys who do it and so can u .... !

respect....boom !

No question anymore: Rinkadink and Cosma

This two names say it all, u can do top music only with software with a better quality than lot of music made with hardware            Signature
