Cosma used only software.
First IM/Shiva Shidapu tunes were made with Impulse Tracker.
The last Prodigy album was largely made using Reason.

Are you asking if you can make pro music on your old and lame pc? The answer is no.
You need a very strong pc (or mac), monitors, pro sound card, midi keyboard. You may not need all those synths and samplers and things with flashing LEDs, but there are things you must have.

Rinkadink is one of the few artists proud to admit it.
Texas Faggot boasted with using a 400mhz laptop for his stuff when he was in Goa last year
steptime-steptime was done using a 800mhz and pulsar card.
I actualy saw in a review on it some mention about the 'large hardware setup' that the reviewer thought was used
I know a few others, but don't feel to tell tales on them...
Many people think it sound better if they think it was done with expensive hardware.
Decent monitors is a must to get really good sound.
Otherwise if you know how to bounce you can manage with a quite old PC, and the soundcard need to be ok for monitoring, thats all.
MIDI keyboard can be nice, especially to learn harmonics. I tend to use it quite little myself though....synths is not really organs or pianos, and playing on a keyboard can be very limiting. |

yeah don't underestimate the computer hardware itself...
Also Pavel mentioned new Prodigy album - each song was sequenced first on Reason, then exported into Protools where sounds were replaced, edited, compressed, psychoacoustically enhanced etc...
Also (drum and bass though) Bad Company's 'temple of doom' was made entirely on Reason then mastered. |

exactly what I had in mind:)
The thing is that I'm buying a new computer, a year ago I bought a pair of very good stereo speakers, unfortunately not monitors, because I haven't thought I would make music someday. I know monitors are necessary for a good sound, but I wonder if I could reach a decent sound with theese speakers and a professional soundcard.

I know that he recorded them on Pro-Tools but did he actually replaced the sounds? With what then? His older gear?
And it's weird you mention drum'n'bass group. Although i never heard this particular band and i have no clue how they sound, but i wonder why the chose Reason, it's been a hell for me and a lot of ppl i know to get a descent bottom end on that program and it's quite essential for Drum'n'Bass. Sampled Bassline?

about the Prodigy thing,
it was mixed on a analog mackie desk,.
to quote the SOS magazine's interview with Liam Howlett:
"The first mixer i ever bought was a Mackie CR1604, which I got when I was a teenager, and i've now got a (Mackie) 32:8 analogue eight-bus console that i love because it gives us our distinctive Prodigy sound."
no matter how much you WANT that kind of sound to come out of toys like Reason, it will never replace something like an analogue desk.,
i'm not trolling .,
there IS a difference.,
there are things you can do to an analogue desk that cant easily be done on digital.,
greets.,

yeah... but isn't liam howlett supported by reason?
i've read an interview were he said all he used was reason but later on in the interview confessed that most of the tracks were then overdubbed with hardware stuff to make some sounds stand out and not get lost in the mix.
i've recently been to a party were an artist was playing sound he made using only software. i must say most of his lead work was drowned out. even with a cheap VA it would have sounded much better... |

Caution man you are entering a very dangerous area, we can go philosophical on this forever. I personally believe that the world is digital and not analog. It's just the resolution is so high that you don't notice it. As for the special character that analog desk are adding to the sound, well it's some sort of cheating isn't it? And btw, ask any classical music technician what gear does he prefer the answer would be in 99.8% of the time: digital, the newest and the cleanest possible.
So it is arguable.
And yes, i pesonally prefer the old analog stuff. And i'd prefer old SH-101 or TB-303 and Moogs than any of the new fancy VA's.
