hello all,

first of all i'd like to just say thankyou to all in this forum, you have all been a great help. One question though, i'm just curious in which order you all do your eq'ing and compression. I just need clarify that you eq before you compress, either way your still achieving the same thing? Would you compress and eq your bass and kickdrum individually before sidechaining? Most importantly, are you constantly eqing and compressing your track elements along the way, or is this a process you do when the song is in completion stage? Also, do leads and percussion need to be as strong in frequency as to bass and kick, i'd assume no, because psy is naturally bass dominant? for example our goal is to fill head space, do these all need to be equal say when you look on a spectrum analyser?

Thankyou,
love and light.           .:TO INFINITY AND BEYOND:.

EQ is allways first.
filter those freqs you don't need to compress....
create a freq-window for the signal...

i do all the eqing mostly along the way - it's easy going.

sidechaining has only one purpose, to make htat bass lower. eq and compression goes as usual... sidechained comp the last in the chain.

nothing has to be dominant...except imagination maybe.
it's all about how u like it.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Djeeezis ! that's a load of questions

The order in which you eq or compress depends on what you're trying to acchieve. It's probably best to try it both ways and to think about what you are doing to the signal: if you have your eq before your compressor, and you have applied some boosts (boosting is not always the best way to go btw), compressing the signal afterwards may very well compress the boosts you have just applied.

I don't compress Kick and bass together a lot anymore, i do use a sidechain compressor on the bass, and i eq the input (kick) to the side-chain compressor to prevent it from following the slow wave of the kick. I eq kick and bass by dipping the main freqs of the kick from the bass and vice-versa (eq'ing before the compressor in this case)

During mixing i make a few eq tweaks, but i normally mix on a different day then writing, otherwise have zero objectivity.

For the last question: you can use a spectrum analyzer to check commercial tracks. It's even better to A/B your own track with a commercial track, and compare the relative volumes with your own track by ear.

There are some good books on the subject: "The mixing engineer's handbook", "Mastering Audio", and "Mixing with your mind" for example.

Boogie on,
