As far as I'm concerned, if you can manage to make a finished, fully produced, clean sounding trance track, you can perform it any way you like. The amount of talent, time, creativity, and energy involved in making even ONE track is many times greater then what is needed to be a "sick DJ" with beat matching skillzzzz. Honestly I use ableton to make my life easier, I can DJ my tracks in any order I like w/o having to worry about how much stupid percentage points to pitch it up or down or how delicately i need to touch the stupid jog wheel. just hit cue and the first beat auto quantizes to what im playing. brilliant. i can then focus 100% on making a perfect mix.
as far as quadra goes, i hate that kinda music, but his live set doesn't bother me because of the above statement. assuming he's playing you unreleased versions of his tracks in 24 bit, that alone is worth the price of admission. i've seen some performers go all out on loop-stacking and live fx in ableton and heard it sound like a pile of distorted garbage, and i've heard guys simply playing back an ableton timeline where i couldn't stop dancing.
'course i'd like to see someone make sick trax AND have a means of performing them well. i come from a performance background. but it has become clear in my years as a trancer that performance is really basically frowned upon for the most part in our scene. people don't want your performance "ego" messing up their chakra-alignment. |
