Why not Cubase or Nuendo?

For full power i'd recommend Pro Tools or MOTU but i doubt you'd have enough money to afford them. As for cheaper solutions i'd recommed Delta 44 or Delta 66.

A pro sound card won't give you the full power of the JP, just better recording quality
If you need a card with midi, you can try Audiophile 2496 from M-Audio.

Their Delta 44/66 are probably everything you need if you already have a powerfull PC/Mac and Cubase/Logic Sequencer.

Because compared to FL those two programs are about as enjoyable as having your testicles cut off, without any painkillers.

Hahahaha, colourful description but as far as i experienced totally untrue.
Working with Cubase (SX and higher) is pure bliss.
Now as for Cubase 5.5 and predecessors, well, John Goodman in "Big Lebowski" said it best:
You are entering a world of pain!
