Hi all isratrancers, Iīve recently bought a jupiter 6 and Iīm adoring it. Problem:I donīt have a sequencer or a soundcard or mixer or any FXunits, phew. What sequencer is good for learning-SONAR, is it to deep or can you learn on the way? 24-bits soundcard, cheaper one, maybe one with midi. Mixer- one that has fairly good quality and not too limited. FX- reverb Delays, analog or digital(24-bit).
This is many questions but I appreciate all answers, I really mean it. Iīm going for mostly second hand.
Thanks |

Hey Jeremias,
Alright, let's start from the beginning:
1.Sequencer: A good sequencer for learning is Cubase VST (i've learned the sequencing basics using it). As far as i know, Sonar is also quite easy and friendly (I used it only for a short while because i'm using Cubase). You would be able to learn it quite fast (assuming you have the tutorial). Both sequencers are good and would allow you to understand the basics. However, I recommend Logic audio, for it is the best sequencer around (right, Bilbo? ;)).
2.Sound card: You should definitely get a 24-bit sound card. In general, I recommend Echo audio's cards or M-audio's card.
Here are the companies' sites:
Echo audio website: http://www.echoaudio.com M-audio website: http://www.m-audio.com
In particular, i recommend the Layla 24 sound card by echo audio. It's audio capabilities are spectacular and it also include midi in/out/thru. check the specs in echo's website. However, this card is not cheap at all (995$ in echo's site, approximately 750$ street price). Therefore, i recommend

Yeah. Mia's recording quality is similar to the Layla's, but it has only 2 inputs which i believe won't be enough for you (how many outputs does a Jupiter 6 have, anyway?). Furthermore, Mia doesn't include midi, so you'll still need a midi interface. |

Itīs Layla then. Isnīt it better to go for Logic direct? But what about a mixer, will I need it yet? Canīt you mix with envelopes in a sequencer as well? And as for the FX:s, I need a reverb delay but havenīt any clues on which I should get. analog/digital, hard/soft etc.
Iīm building my studio from scratch= many questions+answers. Thanx buddies! |

Hello Jeremias,
-Going in Logic direction is a wise decision, but as I mentioned in the previous messages, it'll be a little difficult in the beginning, but you'll handle it.
-I don't think you'll need a mixer, because the Layla has 8 analog inputs which would be sufficient assuming the Jupiter 6 has maximum 4 stereo outputs (although i'm sure it has less).
-What did you mean in saying "mixing with envelopes in a sequencer"?
-Regarding the FX, i haven't played with a lot of FX units, so you better ask Yuli. Anyhow, you can rest assured hardware FX are better than software ones, although there might be surprises in this area.

I saw this screen from SONAR where they draw eq envelopes at the audio files. Ahh! Thatīs just audio files. never mind. Iīd like a synth below 1000$ for pads etc, maybe the Yamaha F1SR although Iīm new to FM. And a sampler but I donīt now of any cheaper ones that can totaly mangle sounds. |
