Artist : Johnson & Haske
Title : No Rest EP
Label : Flow Vinyl
Format : Digital
Release : Dec 08
Tracklist
1. No Rest (original)
2. No Rest (Jerome Isma-Ae & Daniel Portman Remix)
3. No Rest (Christopher Manik No Sleep Till Brooklyn Remix)
Flow Vinyl is the side-label run by maestro Pena, Portugal’s biggest DJ export, and a favourite of the world’s Progressive line-ups. His roster is dedicated to the “clubbier” side of quality dance music, ranging from contemporary Techno to classic Progressive House. On its fourteenth release, Flow delivers the second missive from Johnson & Haske. This pair is the new collaboration of the DJ peers and producers Thomas Johanson, aka Mapusa Mapusa, and Sasha Haske, both from one of the epicenters of the Trance planet, Hamburg, and both of whom have individually released music for the satisfaction of crowds under their respective aliases of Auricular / Human Traffic and Bitmonx / Buzzmonx.
1. Original
The melody of ‘No Rest’ is simply arpeggiated, rather offset, yet sufficiently catchy to alleviate the stomping rhythm of the lightly electro/tech-scented bassline and the puncutation of the metallic stabs, reminiscent of old Auricular indus overtones. Things break classicaly with the introduction of a nice voice sample treated with fx. A good, although quite uncomplicated DJ tool, with a club minded approach, which will smoothly fit into a techy prog-oriented set. But not destined to be a hit either.
2. Jerome Isma-Ae & Daniel Portman Remix
Munich-based Prog-House producer Jerome Isma-ae has now earned international recognition with a string of releases on the most important labels such as Hope, Baroque, Curve, Nervous, Flow, Tribal Vision etc. At the time of writing he is consolidating his number one status in the Beatport Progressive House charts for his remix of Liquid Soul published by Iboga. It’s no longer a secret that Jerome Isma-Ae has developped his craft in building utterly entrancing and addictive leads, with a powerful drive, very suitable for the dancefloor. On this occasion he has joined forces with Swiss DJ, producer (and former porn actor) Daniel Portman. In this collaboration, Isma-ae’s trademark epic dimension is reduced to a brief percussive melody, but thrives on an atmospheric break. Another precious and thoroughly immersive dj tune, in the vein of his classic hits.
3. Christopher Manik No Sleep Till Brooklyn rmx
Christopher Manik is a Techno producer from NYC. His remix sends us back to the (good old?) time of the warehouse free techno party. Let’s say that compared to the audiophile seduction (and complexity) of more creative contemporary approaches, it’s a bit dry and martial in the rhythmic approach, and might make a good soundtrack for the Duracell bunnies.
Bottom line
An interesting release for keeping up to date with the German champions’ production. Among these new tracks which reflect the more minimal, techy evolution of the current progressive style and that of Mapusa in his sets, the Isma-ae rmx is the strongest asset.
