first the release info......

Joshua Gablan first started to become active in the dance music scene in
early 1998, when he began DJing locally in Holland as a progressive house
DJ. Not being able to find the sounds he wanted to play, he decided to start
to make his own music, soon buying himself an Atari, a synthesizer and
mixer.
The next year Joshua began to work closely with Ramamurtu Gresbek and Troy
Leidich, on a project they called Fungus of Light. The Israeli label Krembo
Records took an interest in the new sounds they were developing, and
together with Bonky they released an album in late 1999, on USTA, Krembo's
underground side label.
In 1999 and 2000 the Fungus of Light project toured around Europe, playing
in Israel, Spain, and some of the largest festivals, such as the Voov in
1999, and Boom and Antaris in 2000.
By this time Joshua felt that he wanted to explore some new sounds on his
own, and left the group to study Audio and Sound Technology for a year, all
the time building on his studio, and writing new tracks.
He called his solo project Jocid, and started a close relationship with Doof
Records, an Israeli label. Doof released some Jocid tracks on various
compilations of theirs, and then received such a positive response from them
quickly signed Jocid up for a full-length album, which was released at the
end of 2002.
In 2003 Jocid started to work on his second album, called From Meatware to
Hardware. The first four tracks are the same progressive hard style and for
the last five tracks, the style changes to use fatter basslines, darker
kicks, and a more full on style.
Looking for a new label to present his newer sounds, Jocid approached Sonic
Dragon Records, who heard his music and immediately agreed to release it to
the world.
This is the first release from Sonic Dragon Records, a label committed to
bringing the newest sounds from the underground to the rest of the world.

Now for a review of sorts

1 E.B.M
acidic squirting sounds layered over a fat bassline. flanged or phased high
end passing through to slice open the head. bit of a goa feel to this one.
my favourite on the album

2. Energized
solid kick, tribal toms, kind of dark progressive bassline, spooky samples
coming in to
play, really picks up late in the 5th minute with more of that squirty
acidic goodness

3. Bonkys Lab
not sure if this was written in or influenced by bonky's studio or whether
it's simply a tribute to a friend, but either way, it's rockin. a kind of
droneing bassline, distant tribal percussion, all kinds of samples and
sounds effects arrive then depart just as quickly. trippy undercurrents late
in the 6th minute before changeing things up with a slightly restrained,
plenty delayed, synth line.

4. from Meatware to Hardware.
quirky beginning, suitable around morning perhaps, the track and album
obviously takes it's name from the female sci-fi sample in this tune. tight
tearing sounds, plenty of snare drum, another of those phat droneing
basslines. nice one

5. Dondoperwty
love the start of this one, straight down to business with a solid kick and
bassline. hmmm, wondering if this tune takes its name from the sound that
drops in in the 4th minute? quite a few changes in this tune which i always
find pleasing from a dj perpective.
this tune becomes a little more full sounding too compared to earlier
tracks.

6. Going 2 Snap
more phat kick & bassline to get going, kind of tech percussion, periodicly
breaks into a slightly fluffy and reflective pad sound before heading back
to the full on stuff. seems like a real fusion between progressive and full
on trance in this track

7. Jocid & Drexl - Swingers
great opening bassline, love the way it hangs ever so slighty, builds nicely
into quite a full on tune, breaks down late in the track and becomes more
minimal again allowing for a clean exit when mixing out of it

8. Jocid & O.D. Plus - French Fried Pizza
full on bassline, solid kick, jam packed with synths and samplea, another
nice full tune

9.Kinky Shit
chunky full on bassline to this track, effected creaking and neowww sounds,
lfos grinding to a halt, subtle vocal samples, synth lead comes in about
halfway through.

something for most trance lovers here, as Jocid seems to have taken the
middle way
with this album, it will obviously appeal to lovers of the doof records
releases (me!), but also may be appealing to those who prefer their tunes a
little more full on.

i havent made notes on it since its been in my car stereo as i drive around for a few days. lets just say this artist has stepped up the intensity and production skills from last album. this one is more modern feel and very thick sounding. the tracks flow very well as a complete cd, touching on some warmth, but mostly coming hard with the acidy goo stompers. seems like it would have fit well with doof records,,, goes good in my mind with the new tits on fire sound, ill have to try that out on the mixer.
my favorites from what i can remember are 1,2,4, 5, and 8 but like i said, i was driving, havent written notes, and havent party-tested the cd yet. im happy i bought it though, and thats a good review in itself. #5 stands out in my mind as the top tune on the cd.
oh and the album cover is cool i like the idea of hooking your brain up to a circuit board for direct input!

I'm trying very hard to see the appeal of this music since I now own it but uhm... well, I'll give it a few more listens. Right now it's not engaging my attention at all.

Yep, I'm with you on this one Basilisk. I remember the days of his first album and singles, which DID get my attention. Now he just sounds a bit like most crazy full-on these days does. Shame really. Tracks like Copda will be forever engraved in my mind with those crazy melodies he seemed to have a patent on. Don't get me wrong, it's not that this album is bad. It does have its moments. But it sounds so 'normal' compared to his first album and singles.

This was in a pile of copied cds someone gave me a while ago. I must have gave it a brief pass at the time and tossed it back in the pile. I'd scribbled 'heavy psy prog' on it. That was over a year ago.

Yesterday I saw my CDJs were on (I hadn't touched them in at least a month). There was a disk in one of them, on track 3. I picked up the headphones and immediately fell in love. had to pop the disc out to see who it was. Jocid. How did it get there? Who was playing it? One of my 3 teenage kids?
I dumped it on to my iPod and took a walk down to the park. It was a warm sunny day and I just laid there in the grass listening to the whole thing. My mind wandered. I laughed. even cried, thinking about some sad things. Had some cool ideas to write down and save to think about later. All the while feeling nicely energized by the music.

The next morning I played it taking my kids to school and my younger boy grinned at the squirly sounds at the end of the first track.
This is really cool.
