Not to familiar with the guy but is the idea that JMJ is such a ground breaking artist that he deserves to be discussed in the trance section rarther than in the music section?

JMJ is one of the original pioneers of synthesized music. He might not be as well-known as Moroder or Kraftwerk but he is among their ranks.

This is just MHO, but JMJ invented a lot of what we call trance these days. Of course there were other pioneers of electronic music, but he was the first with those massive synthesizer walls of sound and outright epic melodies. Plus the lightshows he put on are a lot like what one would find at tranceparties around the world, with the lasers and all...
Anyways, if you listen to all the forefathers of electronic music (Kraftwerk, Moroder, Wendy Carlos, Juan Atkins etc...), JMJ is the one who anticipates the trance sound the most. And if you read interviews with artists from the trance scene, JMJ comes up as a major early influence A LOT!

yeah I see know. I was just searching for videos of Oxygene which Detox suggested as a classic and yeah I can see the appeal even though it has its very cheesy elements for sure. Reminds me of Kitaro in some way too though more trancey of course

The first two tracks of oxygen arent cheese at all, specially the number one its so sci fi I could play it as intro to a psytrance dj set and the crowd would start imaging the aliens landing XD

Well, I agree that his Music is cheesy, but I like cheese, and some of that cheese represents some very dear childhood memories for me. And also I don`t listen to his records that often at home, but the combination with the lightshow and fireworks is what makes it stand out. Its not just music, its like a full 360 degree performance for all senses.
Thats why I got the tickets for the live concert in November, after seeing the Monaco show on TV I want to take it all in first-hand. Theres one in Dresden, maybe you should check it out as well, Gunter
To me aswell it reminds me of my childhood, the video of the concert fo paris at la defense was my first aproachment to electronic music.
Because of him i went to the "electronic music/new age" section in the music store and I started finding other things, like front 42, juno reactor(i didnt know it was called goa trance until mush latter in fact XD) and so on.
Also my dad had Oxygen in vynil, after I watched the concert he searched for it. Putting the record and the needle was such a difficult task XD

Fuck, people love to say cheese, but do you know what you're talking about? or is just because is a cool term to use?
If you compare his live performance with anyone in psytrance music, then please tell me again if is cheese oor not...
please respect the music, or we will kill one of the only freedoms to express ourselves..., for sure you never tried to listen classical music as is too boring for you

He is much more popular and well-known than Kraftwerk and Moroder.
And he is way ahead both technological, skill-wise, and performance-wise of any wannabe musician in the psytrance scene.www.beatagency.dk

I'm fairly sure there's quite a degree of miming in what he does; watching his hands (when they were actually shown playing something, which was surprisingly little) I often couldn't relate what they were doing with the music I was hearing (unlike his co-performers who seemed to be playing everything I could hear). Additionally, are we to believe he spends 10 minutes with headphones on setting up those modular synths to get the right sounds for each song? C'mon.

Having said that I love much of his music, it was very influential to me before I was ever in a band.
You misunderstood my point. His setup is way more technical than any psytrance wannabe musician hitting play on the laptop. That was the point. And he also know how to actually play. I suspect many psytrance/progressive ect. artists for not even knowing where the "C" is on the Keyboard (I am not speaking about you or me here he he).www.beatagency.dk

the word it's Cheesy, not Cheese...

i wrote all that as i was watching him playing, is it a lie that magnetic fields 2 it's the Cheesiest tune Ever??
as i said, Oxygene 5 it's super Interesting ,that one catch my ear...(translated to you, i found his stuff amazing right after i listen that tune...)
so please, don't get upset and try not To read between the lines, all that i said was pretty clear ... Crystal Clear...

Well, at some points I also thought his hands didn`t really match the music, but then whenever he played the "Keyboard Guitar" or whatever you call that thing, or when he played the laser harp, or when he was tweaking that modular thing, he was obviously playing live. Still, very hard to tell in all these lights.
On the other hand, as you already said, whenever they showed the other three, they played totally live. I guess the way they do it is the other three play most of the music, and he does a little show upfront and plays the obvious leads and spectacular parts. In German we would say he is the "Rampensau"

I dont know about his big shows, but his "oxygen in your bedroom" tour was full live with lots of vintage year: memory moogs, modulars, VCS3, jupiter 9 etc.
Vids on youtube no longer avaible, but it was an eletronic music lover wet dream.
