come on man...be seriouse !
90% of the worst sound quallity today come from the dark psy area (no offence to anybody)! Of course acts like Penta or Phatmatix have a good sound, much better than the rest of the dark artists...but still...there is a long way !
I personaly would go for Koxbox - Buffer Overdrive
Joti Sidhu - New Sensations, sounds preety cool also ... but still, i noticed he has some too much freqs arround the 200 -300 hz. Same problem i noticed also on his old album "Punktator" - dynamic and powerfull sound, but not crystal clear enough !
  NEW ALBUM OUT SOON !!!

Atma .. agree there about 90% dark psy having bad sound but there are exceptions to the rule .. i bought the penta album and it sounds fantastic in terms of production value to me .. just as good as any prog imo .. but again im no great expert , but do give it a go and judge yourself

mk47, I agree with Atma. Penta has excellent sound production within its genre.
Excerpt from my review of his latest album (Horn Please)

IMO there's no way to compare it with proggy top releases such as most of Iboga or Digital Structures, part of it because in the Penta's style there's much more things going on at the same time, specially around 4.000Hz, and because of the smaller space for the bass at higher bpms.
tsabeat, maybe the already mentioned Domestic album can be usefull for your purposes.
I'd also suggest you'd check some Neurobiotic stuff, like the Pixel - RPNGC (Silicon Sound rmx), it has 145 bpm, a deep bass, melodies and some things happening on top of it (it’s “da bomb” ).
You'll need it in maximum quality, but check the samples:

If you like it you'll probably buy the CD, which has other extremely well executed and mastered tracks, like that Jaia (140 bpm), in fact the first half of this compilation is extraordinary.
Good luck.

I understand your point, if looking for stuff around 150 bpm Penta can be a good reference. Though I disagree about Cosmo (speaking based on what I heard from him).
Respect!

thanx all
some saiko sounding to do....
keep it up im ejoying the thread ...
i do look also for 150 bpm "maximal" style. not only , but also.
obviously 140 bpm jaia master wont work on some of my tracks , but some i go slow and less sounds so it will help as well..
also i thought listening ONLY to what u guys think is top notch for about a week or 2 , will improve my ear some more
one last thing - cosmo - nope!

1200 Micrograms, first album - the CD sounds great on both my Genelec 8040s and my Sony TV (good test for systems with less bass extension). I heard the track Hashish on a big PA (DJ Serge Souque) - great sound! This is the only full-on CD I have, but the production and mastering are really good IMO.
BTW:
NEVER use MP3s as reference material; they differ too much from the originals. If you cant hear it, make an MP3 and import it into an audio track in Cubase, and put the original wav from the CD on an audio track under it. Make sure both tracks are the same height, with each track filling about half of the window, and be sure to have the starting points at exactly the same position. Compare the waves and you will see the differences! |

Imho u will be lost tsabeat. Here u will hear lots of different sounds and mastering.
First, I doubt most of the users here can really say something about the MASTERING work of these tracks/albuns.... Why?? Cause they can´t compare A/B with good reference. For those who has the reference(like unmaster versions, or maybe two master work for same track), forget about this...
I will talk ONLY about mastering engineers I know a bit:
1)Charles Michaud aka "Triptych" : it´s suspicious to me to say about Triptych. I like his SOUND. So his master works well for me also! I think it´s a well balanced between "Loud vs Open Mix".... U can hear his master at all Turbo Trance cd´s. Check Oforia - Instant Food (Triptych RMX). MASSIVE!
2)Henry Sarmiento : the guy that master for Spun Records. I have some tracks mastered by him also. I think his master is the more "Open Mix" style... i.e, the sounds from my music became very spacial and very well distributed(something that was not so open at mix stage). Any Spun Records cd shoudl have his trademark master.
3) Ido aka "Domestic" : here should be the LOUDEST master type. Althought it can be the loudest, I never hear the annoying "compressing effect" at his mastering(for example, when the level goes little down at a big hit). Now my humble opinion: maybe Ido´s master is the one that will make your track best sounding for typical psytrance track AND dancefloor. Sometimes I think his master lacks of sub bass, sometimes too much high. But always work!!! Maybe it´s cause he works so much with same style of production, so he knows how to make it big sound for psytrancers! Check Hommega music! ps> I´ve never been mastered by Ido, so here it´s really what I hear from Hommega cd´s!
It´s hard to point u to specific tracks, cause this way U should listen the production itself, not only the master...

because it has character, the last Prometheus album.
for smoother stuff, I thought the last deviant species album was really really well done when it was released. Haven't listened for a while though - could be it hasn't aged so well. When I purchased it though, I really felt they had taken it exactly to the line where if they had gone any further it would have suffered, but as they hadn't gone further it was just perfect. You could hear that they'd pushed it out just a little, and injected some 'heat' into it, but not enough to make it brittle, just shiny.
I find a lot of trance is a bit sterile and clean at the moment, you know?
I also feel that a lot of tracks have cut out too much sub - I'm not saying don't control it... but so many tracks have had the warmth ripped right out of them by being pushed that bit too far. That's what I'd really be looking to avoid.
But its so incredibly personal. I'm odd in that I like a bit of fuzziness in the sound - makes it stand out from the hoardes of identikit trance. This is just my opinion though - could be that you are big fan of the sound I don't like - in which case, do whatever I tell you not too, and it will all turn out fine
