I rather ask why do you want to make music?
Because you burn for it and know it's what you want to do?
or
Because you think it's cool and to impress your friends/girlfriend?
Last.
Do you know anything about making music? It's not just something you do! It takes talent, creativity and skill.
And for your original question I can say this.
Yes it's expensive. Very expensive if you buy your equipment instead of download the latest tracker software and plugins. |

Dou you wish starting what kind of music project? If your business is eletronic music, you only need a good PC, sequencer + VST instruments and effects and, last but not least, a good soundcard. (don't forget the keyboard to write your melodies etc.)
You should start out with 'FLStudio' (old Fruityloops), which is a sequencer+drum/sampler tool+effects box. 'Reason' is very powerful and a bit more complicated. I don't remenber the prices now, but find out on Internet! Maybe $300 each, I really don't now... |

Just get an 'easy' sequencer like Reason or Fruityloops and start freaking around. If you're still interested and hooked after a year you will know what to buy and how expensive it is. Just try it and see if you can make complete tracks. |

a good computer+good monitors and a controller should get you started but if you want to get serious dont expect to spend less than 5000$ USD .

This is the best advice here. Do it this way u need no money, only for fruityloops. Start producing with ur speakers, learn synthesis basics, learn how to do things and learn to bring ur ideas through ur pc to the speakers.
It takes lot of time to learn but if it is fun for u and not stress then u will know after a time that u stay with producing as hobby. Don't expect getting money just do it as hobby for ur pleasure.

i agree with everything booytrip said except the very last sentence. i know quite a few talented people that never finish tracks. its just hard to say "im finished." dont look at each track and try to decide when its a song... just go with it and see what happens.
start with fruityloops and use free vsti's from www.kvr-vst.com ... grab some effects while you are at it. then just play... once you feel comfortable, start making songs.
if you are still interested its time to move to something like Cubase and/or Logic. the things you learned from fruity will help you out a lot. |

No u can easyly stay with fruity, which is the best sequencer for producing dance music in my view, even better if the next version will be released.

i'm with EYB when it concerns fruity...
I was in the same situation... But now i work, so it's not a problem anymore...
Just try to get a decent pc, with 1Gig ram and a 1Ghz+ processor and a fast hard disk.
Then start looking for an illegal sequencer (they'll be to expensive to buy right now) and start browsing the freeware for plugins, there are lots of them, and lots of them are good too. Or you can download lot's of illegal plugins, but for most purposes freeware is more than good enough, especially when you're just starting. |

For the begining you need: some good monitor speakers. A good sound card (external). A good pc at least 1 giga Ram. A midi keyboard for sure. Cubase sx 2. And some plugins you can download. And many hours to spent for your creation. 1500 euros i think you r ok.

Hey ppl. The guy don´t know nothing about production... So why saying to him buyng monitors, soundcards and etc???
Just get a sequencer and pray for your pc+soundcard can handle with the software+plugins.
My advice is start with Fruity Loops(that needs less pc performance). Then start composing. After let´s say 20 tracks U will see that u start to understand how the things works... Maybe that time u can think better of buying better gear, like monitors, soundcard, better pc, synths, etc...
