hahaha. yep, i've spend DAYS surfing presets... getting absolutely nowhere with my tune, though. usually, i only get somewhere when the ideas come first, and i try to synthesize what i hear in my head. when i try to make my head write music around a preset, i write much more slowly and lazily.
i ain't knockin' presets though.

yes..most of them are cheap sounding, some of them are actually really wicked,(Gary FL sylenth1 soundset for instance....VERY GOOD STUFF!) they're always a good place to start though , you can breathe life into them a lot quicker than you can a flat saw innit patch. Randomizing everything can yield some decent results sometimes too. But usually when im not having a good synth day, i turn to stitching random samples together, chopping them up and using monstrous FX chains on them, rinse and repeat. Sampling has never failed me!

Sometimes when i can't figure out anything in a couple of hours, i go through some presets to turn pads into wicked leads for example, and sometimes i just go through them to see how they are made, not on sylenth though, the interface kinda bores me, but it is good, no doubt about that.

This is where I'm RIGHT now! It sucks  The thing is that every time I'm unable to make anything decent I just want to sell all my gear and find a new hobby. And then in a couple of days/weeks I make something awesome and I want to keep my gear again. Frustrating though. Especially when you fail and turn on some Shpongle  Cus then you REALLY feel like a failure.
EDIT: We should make a forum thread where we can post the stuff we made when we got that feeling. Could be fun |
