The best way to make chillout is to not have any idea what you're doing and just start making something until it sounds cool.

This is what I've done and it's starting to sound pretty cool .           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

agreed. I don't know if this is obvious, but you really need to be in a certain mindset to make this kind of music - pretty zen'd out, calm, collected - at least for me. I usually make it after I come home after doing stuff all day.

As for time signature, you can do anything you want. 4/4 is easiest to follow, so it could be easier to listen to for someone who wants to chill out with some slow psy.

Tempo for me is usually around 90-100 bpm. But I've heard way slower, and that's up to you and where your mind takes you.           www.musicproductionnatural.com || www.facebook.com/djamoeba | facebook page

You can use same psy "recipe" but at half the tempo, say for example 72bpm...

Go 4/4 but you can use other grooves than typical 4 on the floor.

Basically a lot of space (reverb n delay)... some etno stuff like percussion or voices, big sounds and inspiring textures.

Just have some fun at slower tempos and get a chilling vibe yourself, you'll get to it.

we should deal with making music like that to make the best we can imo, just saying ourself to make psytrance is limiting our creativity and making us in a way some sort of copycats or clones

Exactly. I've been having more fun making my experimental downtempo music lately because there's so much more freedom. The only objective is to make something that sounds nice, not try to fit into a specific genre or anything. Really it's a shame that more people don't like chill/downtempo music, there is a ton of creativity there.

It's funny too because every producer who has been making psytrance tempo music that I have told to make some downtempo really loves it. If anything it's a good way to break things up.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
