It's fair to sample Indian Sacred Chants for psy tunes?

Its great using indian chants / mantras / raagas etc.... just one point to remember is that majority of the Indian mantras / chants and the like are on a Minor Chord. Most producers forget to blend this with their overall production.

Either blend the pitch of the sample with your overall tune or start your whole tune based on the pitch / scale that the chant or mantra is in.... I think this is a better way to do it instead of just a paste job of some spiritual sample as an intro or the outro to a tune....

Love ethic fusion with psy.... they go well together mainly because of the scale / pitch i.e. Minor chords...

I think it has been done to death. Fair but pretty generic IMO.

damn i missed that Electric Universe tune, listening now..very wicked
@freeflow i still don't kno what is the sample telling, i'll stop a random indian man in da street and ask him

It's a mantra (chant recitation) from the Vishnu Purana, a part of the ancient sacred Indian Text Book, "The Vedas". The mantra is praising Lord Vishnu, the Supreme personality of Godhead. The Creator, Maintainer and Destructer of the material Universe.

im not from india/hindu but pls, before u afirm something that u are not sure, do a research...

in fact lord vishnu s the mantainer.... ( nor the creator nor de destructer )

lord shiva s the destructer

and lord brahma s the creator....

maybe the unity can be called brahmaN but im not sure of it .... tho im quite sure its a sin to call lord vishnu as creator and destroyer...

this especially bothers me when its someone who isnt connected with that culture or religion and they grabbed it off a sample cd because it sounds "spiritual". Actually singing in any other language bothers me if the song wasnt written by someone who can translate it.

here is a tune i wrote... it is also named: Kali Maa Shakti De - reason being it is a vox sample of Amresh Puri chanting the same in the track.... I am from india and to me it made sense to base a track with the vox and name the track after the sample used...

I think it should be OK, as long as you do it tastefully and respectfully.
Respecting the contents: not mixing it with voices of drunken dudes or lame lectures about serotonin or (like Enigma did with the Gregorian chants) some woman’s voice moaning how much she wants you.
Respecting the form: not glitching it, not down-pitching it into a sinister rumble, taking care to match the key etc.
Why would it be a problem then? As for your concern about disrespecting it by putting it into a dance tune, put it into an ambient one instead – problem solved.

Among (many-many) religious people I’ve dealt with, Hindus seem by far the most tolerant. Even some BJP sympathizers are. If they don’t like what you did with your track, they will just tell you. I doubt anybody is going to tie you to Kali’s statue and leave you to street dogs for that.

You can hear quite a few tunes with samples of athan – yet you don’t hear any bombs blasting because of it. Fundamentalists don’t listen to that music. And mainstream Muslims are OK with it (again - assuming it has nothing to do with drunken dudes or horny French women ).

About “No ethnic trance!” – why not?
Didn’t it all start as techno with an Indian twist, anyway?
So many tracks out there with American or British English samples – that’s ethnic too. Just not of the same ethnicity as most people in the scene.

Willsanquil, I totally agree with you about the voice samples. How many times can we hear Morpheus' “free your mind” bit? And what’s with those pharmacology lectures? I am driving my car, enjoying “Naturall Frequency”; then I hear this dude explaining stuff about serotonergic receptors to me. Suddenly, I have this flashback from the grad school days – not happy...

Although, those down-pitched dudes – a Russian and a Ukrainian – in Puoskari’s “Different Path” were hilarious! And it’s cool, because the whole track was hilarious too. “I am concentrating on ... uh ... the space station...”

PsyGalaXy, good luck with those chants. Come think of it, if you post the track in the New Tracks forum, you will know whether anybody finds it offensive or not.

Sanathana, interesting track. The picture goes well with it too.

I wonder if you could explain to me something I never understood (off-topic): why was Shiva resting in the middle of the battlefield? In the picture you have here it even looks like he was sleeping. Was it like “Kali can handle the battle – I’ll just take a nap” or there is more to it?

...would be interesting to play this track to my Bengali friends...

When kali went on a rampage killing the rakshashas / demons, she went out of control and even the trinity couldnt help but just watch her... she was created out of all the powers of the trinity including shiva, brahma, vishnu....

She was another form of durga / lakshmi who was the wife of Shiva... the power was bestowed upon her to bring peace by killing the demons...

when she got out of control, shiva decided to sleep among the corpses of demons i.e. in her way....

according to hindu mythology and culture, a wife respects her husband and touching her feet is considered dis-respectful... so when shiva slept among the corpses, Kali in her rampage kept walking killing demons and eventually stepped on her Husband, Shiva... as soon as she did this as a gesture of a mistake she brought out her tongue as if to say 'Oh Damn what have i done by stepping on my husband...' hence her tongue is out... and thats what the picture symbolizes...

@ Koozer mox: thanx bro.. glad you enjoyed it

@ Elastic_Plastic: Sorry it didnt do it for you... It is not meant to be dark it is meant to be night time psychedelia and maily a form of psychedelic expression in the form of music would be interesting if you pointed out where u thought the rhythm was off thanx for listening
