I've been reading about Logic Pro 7.01
, Cubase SX 3.01, and Digital Performer 4.52
I use a mac G4... and am wondering what would be a better software...
these were some of the points.
might be helpful for others too..
CUBASE SX 3.01
-good for integrating software and external hardware
-best for VST
-many of the good features apply for a workstation that has lots of external hardware only... and thus if one works with mostly software only then lots of things dont come into play
-ability to edit MIDI (what exactly does this mean?)
-Too many windows etc.. (Digital Performer has an integrated window which is supposedly very good and time saving)
LOGIC PRO 7.01
-stong instrument bundle
-strong all-round music production tool
-physical-modeling synthesizer that mimics the behavior of real instruments
-'Ultrabeat' versatile drum machine
-controles and interface of some of their tools are very complicating
-looping is seamless for pre-built loops, but there is now way to loop material you have recorded...
-Can be difficult to learn Logic
-best all round bundle
DIGITAL PERFORMER 4.52
-Easiest to learn and use compared to logic and cubase
-more sophisticated time-mapping
-broader hardware support
-not strong in bundle plug-ings
-consider buying DP and Reason apposed to buying Logic alone (SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN)
-Good for beginners and Pro's who want efficiency.
If someone could make an actual comparison in terms of psy-trance production...
for e.g which of these points and features apply to trance production etc... psy production has some very specific issues and I'm wondering what of the stregnths and weaknesses of these softwares apply to psy.
Thanks in advance and hope this might be helpful for other beginers

I'm wondering what are those points and features that apply only to trance production.
All of those programs are great to produce many types of music and are flexible enough to be customized to each one needs. There are many posts that compare those programs.
BTW, DP is definitly not an easy program to learn.

I think two much more important questions as a beginner would be: 1) Who do you know that can help you with any of these applications. 2) What suits your budget.
Once you have learned a bit about music production, you can make a much more informed decision about what would fit your workflow best. They are all good enough to make music with anyway.

Yeah undertow is right, any softaware won't do what you can do, softwares only make life easier, but if u own a mac go for either logic or DP., but honestly logic 7 it's an amazing production software it has all a musician need. |

Imho:
Cubase is great for audio work, but I guess Logic´s sound is bit better... That´s it!

Thanks....
so basically any of these programs can do everything necessary, but logic is the more all-round software?
does this mean that, technically, using logic for example, I could compose an entire track without the need of external hardware?

Hey Janux
I think undertow is right, you have to learn a bit about music production so you be able to decide what suits you best.
I use logic 7.1 and i can tell you is an amazing program, you have everything you need there, soft synths, all kind of processors you need to make a nice production.
I think if you are a mac user the atractive thing now is the new OS Tiger and how logic is optimized to run in Tiger
See logic features here

No program is difficult if you put dicipline and effort to it, nothing comes from the sky
good Look !!
Hope it Helps
