Indeed, I recently had a client with an album where I had to do nearly the whole thing three times before they were satisfied. They are happy now though, but it was a very stressful week for all concerned! That's where keeping a level head can be important too. Can be difficult communicating about such subjective things as sound, just through text. And the artists are obviously so close to their work, and care so much. Tight label deadlines also add to the stress. These tend to be the best learning experiences though, get you thinking outside the box/trying new things out etc. E.g. I just learned that a combination of clipping my ADC and limiting can sound better than just using the limiter for all the final grunt work. Never thought I'd do it (goes against all the standard rules of gain staging and sound quality), but it sounded great, and loud, and the client was happy!

this thread was a great idea guys! i was using colin master as reference this morning and give it a other try,really helped me to improve and to know better my room.
would be great to do it once again with a other tune ! i find it very usefull .
maybe if some are intrested we could pay a pro studio with expensive highend equipment so we can compare. |

the vesrion i replaced i did it when trying the api channel strip, it use api compression eq and even preamp lol and distressor (that i drived too much in distortion mode making the highs too much harsh enche why i replaced that version )
if anyone is curious i post it,my other version is full plugin but like it more even if it s not right, used just a comp and a eq if i remember.
btw can t wait to have the strip back when listening, even if that version suck it had something to the sound damn nice ! the dynamic and color.. even in mastering it could be usefull i think
should have used my cv after it to sweeten the highs didint think about it.. |

i post it if their is some curious, i tried to sweeten the highs a little with a eq band cause it was limit painfull, all the harshness, hard highs/mids come from the distressor used like a tape emu but drived way too much (didn t really noticed it on my cans but had ears tired too of full day sound..)) but we can still here a little the api sound like a record effect that is probably really awesome when used at his potential

really mate? depend the material but cliping can be more transparent than any limiter when the clip are very short ,even digital ciliping ! it can make the transient stronger something ppl like usualy in music like psytrance techno .
i haven t bortherd with loudness chain on this test as i was not happy with the tonal balance i could get to start with ..i just slaped a limiter but i would sure have tryied to clip a little with something like inflator,the mio cliper or a other plug to maintain the most punch if it don't distort the tune too much |

For those using Cubase 5 or 6, here's the project I've been using to compare the different versions. Just arrange stuff like this on your computer and it should work. Don't worry about missing files (other than masters) or plugins:
Folder: Mastering Shootout
-->Mastering Shootout.cpr
-->Folder: Audio
----->Mastered tracks
Each version has been approximately adjusted for equal loudness (apart from Upavas'!)

I can't wait to discuss this. I might have to enter mine early (party this weekend) but will be back, I hope Monday before the deadline to see how this has developed. I know there are lurkers trying to wait till last min. While that's cool and all, really the point of a deadline, however I give props to the folks that have already entered considering they are working in a more realistic fashion. Less time to wait means more product lol. Business/bs side of things. I am just grateful we will all learn from this and I thank you for generating this idea! Exactly what this forum needed |

if there lurkers trying to wait till last min like you say well thats not a competition, it s just for learning some stuff... don't see the point of waiting.. i m sure most who uplaoded haven t put lot of work on it either..(colin saying he would change a few things on his version..me i did mostly on cans, still haven t put my abosrbers at their place and find the place of the monitors..just to say it s for the fun and learning , everyone shouldnt have afraid to post their version,it can be only benefic )
for a competition it would need everyone upload his version at same time to be fair but it s not what this thread is about . (also the time spent on it, pro dont spend hours but more minutes on a tune ,it need good experience) |
