Hey! This is very good idea making masters from the same track. I can hear a lot of differences between masters. And i know my favourite one so far.
Maybe you should do another one, trance or house track for the people who are now wondering which mastering service they should go for.

I'd definitely be up for doing it again with a Trance tune! Let's get this one finished up first though! I intend to spend next Monday downloading and having a good listen to all the contenders alongside the original, and will post my notes on Monday or Tuesday, time permitting. I'm imagining they are all going to sound pretty good, but different.
The idea wasn't so much for punters to be able to choose which one they like the sound of more, but more for the people mastering to be able to learn from each other. But yeah, by all means, if you really like one more than the others, then please hire that one!

Ok, I am really very new to mastering, I find mastering to be a very subjective part of music production, I have a bit of a hard time finding what someone (even myself with my own tracks) would be looking for, especially since the artist in question did not leave comments or anything, except that he does not like over compression. I also lack some much needed ms tools at the moment...
I would greatly appreciate some feedback to this mastering attempt of mine on the link below.

And I must say, thank you for posting this. Great idea, this gives a lot of people the chance to really learn something about mastering... great idea!

No worries. Looking forward to reading everyone's comments next week!
Although most people these days seem to start to learn mastering on their own tunes (myself included), it probably isn't the greatest idea. One of the main things about mastering is that you hand it off to an objective third party with great ears and great gear, for a fresh perspective.
You'd be surprised the amount of clients I have that do only give as much info as this one. Another part of the art is deciphering what they mean, and then knowing how to apply that to their music. A clear chanell of communication is very important.
I still feel like a beginner and still get it wrong some times... Good to be always learning though!

Yea, i always looking for certain presence for a good mastering. How elements of the song are standing in the air. How sounds are gently touching your ears and make kind of cinematic feeling. Over comressed is often too close to me, i like to keep distance and enjoy every part of the song. Balance is very important. Ambient or trance, no matter what music is it.
I highly respect people who has ears to make that happen. Ofcource mixing is even more important, but mastering should give a nice boost to good mix and make it breathe.

anyone can have a go? i have never tried mastering anything other than my own tracks and i'm not near my best pair of speakers anytime soon, but i'm sure curious as to how my attempts at mastering sound compared to the mastering pros here in this thread. so here's my try:
