So im mixing and mastering completely ITB in Cubase
the track went to TC Character with just 10% of, well, character, or color, in the low frequency domain. the lows in the original track sound too cold and digital (well actually, as they are) so I tried to 'fix' it with this plugin.
Next was UAD Precision EQ with 30 Hz high pass filter, 2 dB shelf boost @ 74 Hz (hi, Gregg). Also I boosted with hi-shelf everything from 9.5 kHz and higher.
Then it went to Precision Multiband that was set to only 70% wet. it compressed 2 bands of mid-high and high frequencies. The first was doing only about 0.5-1 dB of GR and boosting +0.5 dB. Highs were compressed to about 1.5 dB of GR and 2 dB boost. Att and Rel setting where around 3.0 and 30 ms.
Next comes UAD Precision Maximier set to around 50% of "shape", which adds coloration that i LOVE. Didnt hear anything ITB that sounds close to Precision Maximizer.
Then Waves L2 with only 2.5 dB of GR on those several peaks. Other parts were mainly not compressed. -0.2, ARC, IDR.
Fade out.

have downloaded most of the file but i m waiting a little to comment ,or it could be not accurate at all , not too sure whats going in the low/low mids here
what i did on the track i used a plugin eq to boost the highs and the low and i reduced the mids a little.. then i compressed very lighty with a plugin ssl comp with not too fast release to try to bring up more details and glue , used m/s, high pass on the side around 150/200 hz and boosted very little the side with very gentle high shelf then a limiter. was not happy with the master... i should have checked translation ..the tonal balance i didn t like it much , i also would have enjoyed it a little more colored to give a more finished polish and more depth.

I had to because mine was so bad and i got comments on something barely listenable . Don't be so strict. I lost ok. Let it be. Don't comment on this one above as the legal version ok... Besides everyone else did put up another one or two out of the official shootout.
Learn from this one big thing again, hear with clean ears before upload and don't overdo.

the lastest one he added, el something if i remember?
my opinion could change cause long time i din t compare limiters but i found when transient is not the highest priority like on a track like this, elephant was my go to .
its relly good for depth and weight ,elephant is the right name, it s still good on transient too . the clip mode was not really good imo at cliping..
the oversampling can sound like it smear the transient a little if i remember used it always turned off..
for mastering imo it s better to avoid upsample /downsample in plugins as real time rate convertion is not on par with good offline ones ,it can degrade more the signal than enhance it |

I used Elephant with ElUni algorithm too. I only use over sampling if I have to, to get rid of ISPs, but it does colour the sound in a bad way (something weird in the high end), I think. Best to stick with OS off if possible.
Elephant's really the only limiter I ever use, but I've recently been experimenting with getting loudness by clipping the ADC instead, and just using Elephant with a -0.3 ceiling and no gain. Seems to be much more transparent used this way.

My chain :
1 - Baxter EQ : HP @ 24hz, +2 dB @116 Hz, +5dB @ 1.8 Khz, LP @ 21 kHz. It can seem quite drastic, but I really think the track needed some serious lifts.
2 - Fabfilter Pro-Q : slight boost (0.8 dB) @ 40 hz, little cut (1.2 dB) @ 200 Hz to control the muddiness. A broad cut arround 1 Khz. I really like those combo : big boosts with baxter combined with carefully placed cuts after, it gives interesting frequency shapes.
3 - Fabfilter Pro-C in send, M/S, panned complety to the side, to just increase a little bit the stereo field.
4 - Fabfilter Pro-C, again, in parrallele compression, to add a little density. (I did not do compression on the mid signal on the first Pro-C, because i wanted differents time parameters).
5 - IQ4gui, a free dynamic EQ by Dan Worrall, tweaked to 1500 Hz, to really control thoses mids and passages which can be a little hard sounding. It cuts sometimes up to 1.5 dB, but the attack is long, to let snare transients go unaffected. (I really love dynamic EQs)
6 - Oxford limiter. Basically doing nothing but safe mode engaged, that add density with little harmonics.
7 - Elephant, 3 dB of gain, El-uni, with 5.0 of knee, to limit a little a gain loudness, but keeping also some macrodynamics.
8 - flat 16bits TPDF wavelab dither (I really don't like noise shapping for thoses EDM tracks which can be played over 110 dB on huge sound systems ! you don't want the dither energy getting toward the highs !)
So my strategy for the frequency balance was to boost drastically on the baxter, to get the highs & high mids where I wanted them, and to control the mids after.
On the dynamic side, I just added a little bit density and stereo field by subtle parrallele compressions, and a touch of limiting to get a bit of loudness.

Xoc i really enjoyed your tonal balance and your master but i remember my first impression was that it sounded totally like a itb master, i was 100% sure it was made only with plugins. even if it dont mean much it s how it translate in my words..still i find it s one of the best master, but it have that kind of sound that leave me cold ,now u say you used the fabfilters plugins, maybe it come from this as usualy fabfilter plugins color leave me cold too . after it s just taste but i thought you might find it intresing input..
i hope i dont offend you, i like your master better than mine, but it s just what i dislike in yours. |

Hello , sorry but I was out for a while. Have listened to some of the masterings, have yet to come up with an answer to them.
Thank you for the nice comment, yeah the mids... they could definitely have more presence but it seems so damned easy to overkill with it... balance is indeed the key... ! Something I need to work on for sure!
