well i don know if there's anything cubase can do which ableton can't but i would like to tell this that Ableton live 6.0 is a very very powerful software and it's no more for just live act. it's used for production in studios.
i am just waiting for the reviews of Cubase 4.

maybe then i can decide which one is better.
but i think afterall the production matters the software can be anything.
if u know wat u wanna do u can make really good music on anything which you are comfortable with.

Hi ColinOOOD,
do you know how deep the impact of this granualar resynthesis is? it's really that bad?
Have you done a/b hearing tests?
I really wanna know, cause i appreciate the workflow of live very much.
I know your very experienced producer so i'm waiting for your answer...

Live6 is an amazing audio workstation environment. i miss what Megalopsy was saying about the event lanes.. there could be more automation sculpting functionality in that area.. like cubase has.
also i must make mention of the ability to record a song by using the "scene" functionality in Live. THAT is awesome. its like djing your loops real-time as the track is recording. you can then flip over to the arrangement view to see your track is being written as you are cueing and dropping loops and midi events. this is a great way of getting an idea of how you want a track to flow by bringing in and out audio and midi tracks in realtime. big fan of this.. "Live" indeed. |

Its true, Live is an amazing program, ive
used it for a long long time. Its so
fast and easy to use, it really gets
your creativity flowing. However, for
me, this is a double edged sword. You do
things so fast, you might speed through
the process and forget to polish things.
This happened a lot in my case.
And I recently switched to Cubase because
for some strange reason, maybe its the
sound quality issue you were talking about,
I find myself having to EQ less and less
in Cubase than I did in Ableton, seems
Cubase has a much more clear sound right
off the bat.
So. If your not an audiophile, get Ableton,
you will never regret it. If you are, just
stick to Cubase... however if Ableton ever
gets the same sound quality as Cubase or
Logic, then Ill probobly switch back to
Live 6.
Oh, and yes, Ableton is THE program to use
for live gigs.

Cubase can surely handle better your CPU management regarding real time effects and vsti.
It is that the algorythms are bettrer, all the engine will work better on cubase, when it comes to inserts, gui, etc.
I would say, combine many programs and use its special abilities, then, choose a more stable and friendly to YOU for the master sequencer, such as, Cubase or even Cakewalk 6, that has a better bit resolution, 64 bits, imagine the nice reverbs on a super beat mangaled in Live.....

I'm using Cubase since SX2 (now i have SX3) and it really does it for me. I can't find anything to complain on. The interface, performance, features and their handling, native VST support (well, not such a big deal, but nevertheless), sure one of the most proven audio engines from the old and respectable developer. However i tried Live! and... almost broke my brain to get a sound from it. I don't know why, but Ableton seemed completely unfriendly. I dont say its bad or something, it just didnt work out for me the first and the second times i installed it. Well, i should keep trying.

live dont has this!

I don't think that you can crossfade audio in Live, where you crossfade a piece of audio tail into the intro of a new audio clip on the same track...
I may be wrong but couldn't figure it out when I was demoing it a while back. I'll definitely be using it for live performance though once I get there.
I'm happy making music in Cubase 4 anyway, Live seems good for live and I'll happily use it for that. ~Airyck~

live, for me, is about the creative environment.
with one monitor and one key you can access pretty much all the information you need to make music freely. we all know how important GUI design is for psychoacoustic fuckery; and to me, i find live looks far more instantly inspiring than REAPER or Cubase. it may seem small, but for some people it really makes a difference. i just think it's a wonderful workspace to be in, one that positively encourages creativity. a lot of people like to use Live as a musical notepad for sketching out ideas; that, to me, is its great strength. it's accessible, but suprisingly powerful... particularly if you really utilise the power inherent in the session/arrangement relationship.
live 6 includes a lot of great improvements over live 5... firstly, the mixer section is far, far better - it's completely different to previous iterations. Deep Freeze is awesome - it frees up so much CPU it's unreal. crossfader curves are a nice touch too. i'd also like to mention the stability issue. i've never had live crash and lose information yet, and hopefully it never will...
what i desperately want for live 7:
- automation curves!!! this is the one aspect of live i am genuinely unhappy with.
- full surround support!!! when i work in surround i have to use a workaround which can be clumsy.
- a native LFO plugin would be great... please! |

You know you can rewire ableton into cubase, having cubase be the master and ableton the slave.... Talk about having your cake and eating it too...

I have had a couple crashes but the great part was that Ableton reopens after a crash and can find everything. I absolutely love that.
Anyhow, my process uses both applications. I write everything in Live since it handles audio samples and clips way more efficiently than Cubase has ever done for me. On a Dual Core Macbook I have been upto 36 tracks and the CPU is at 5%. Mind you that I tend to write a part and then bounce to audio immediately which a habit that has carried over from the older days of using slow computers. So in this example there are no effects or instruments running. Just straight audio. Once the track is entirely laid out everything is bounced and dropped into either Cubase or Protools where the mixing and editing gets done.
They both are really great programs.

Ableton live is the best thing that has happened to me in years!!! Once you are familiar with the way in which you create music you will wonder what the hell you were doing in cubase logic etc for so longg!!!!!
For me cubase and logic have the most boring and uninspirational Gui in the world!! Arguing about sound quality between DAWs to me is just plain stupid cos it does not matter one bit. Sound quality is only going to come from yourself but anyways thats been said before so..
With ableton there are just so many crazy new possibilites for my music.
I mean the other day me and a friend had a 20 minute continous psyjam where we were creating leads, breaks, basses, new track parts, just as you would have if you were jamming as a real band!! And then to be able to go back and edit the parts which you liked and edit the automation and everything... No other program can compete with that! Its midi capabilities are amazing. Whats even more amazing is how easy and fun the program is to use. And now with the new collab with Cycling 74 (creators of Max/Msp and a whole lot of creative multimedia applications) expect to see some crazy new innovations in the next few versions. With live its really like you are playing an instrument.
Instrument racks rock!!! Ableton is the future!!!

In Live settings I've actually switched back down to Live 5 as many people using 6 are having issues with occassional audio drop outs (something about how Live 6 is reading the cache I'm told). In the studio its probably not such a big deal to have a split second drop out one or twice an hour, but I've had to deal with the problem in every live show I've playe since I upgraded to 6 in July 2006. At first I thought it was my computer, but my last flawless live show was done last month on Live 5, which was my first flawless one since June of 2006, which was also on Live 5.
I still love Live, but I have had far less problems with Cubase than with Live over all. A lot of it boils down to being lucky with your set up I think.
